Lots to do here - 2/10/2011

I really like New York, well do i have to go into it but I also can appreciate what Miami has to offer, beautiful "winters" and great outdoor activities, sailing, fishing, jogging in a nice park, etc. There's always something going on, you just gotta make an effort to find it unlike NY where you can just kinda walk outside and pump into a museum, theater, or live music in central park.

He did, she did, and even, they did! - 10/1/2010

The beaches are beautiful, the weather is great, superb restaurants, the international flare allow one to meet interesting people, etc. But all that back and forth from the politicians is a way of life in the Florida and in the Miami area politics. It is exhausting,I either change chanels, set the mute button or put on a cartoon cd- All that finger pointing does not help the voter make a sensible choice. I'll still go to the urns, because it is my duty, but I, like probably millions of other voters, will stand there and think ten times before marking the ballot! And probably later regret the choice I made!

Can't wait to leave Miami!!! - 6/24/2010

I've been living in Miami for 13 years and I can't wait to leave here. My issues with Miami: 1). The weather. I HATE HATE HATE heat and humidity and that's all I get here. If you like lots of sunny days and high humidity constantly, then Miami is for you. But for me, no way! 2). The job market. I haven't been working for nearly 5 months now and I've been searching and applying anywhere that will allow me to. I say that because MOST to all jobs say you have to speak Spanish to apply. Yes, the majority of the people here are Hispanics. I skip more than 20 job postings per day (that I'm fully qualified for) just because I don't speak Spanish. Even simple office jobs say you must speak Spanish to apply. Ugh! 3). Recreation. I honestly don't see the hype about Miami. There's nothing to do here. Sure, there's the beach and some museums. Other than that, NOTHING! Note: Whether you have a family, single or married and planning on moving to FL, your best bet is Orlando. It's full of theme parks and lots of recreations, low crimes, people are nice and best of all, they drive better than Miamians.

not the best place to live - 3/28/2010

If you like the stress of getting to work on time everyday and the car accident action, added to rude people and crime, come to Miami! Positives: nice beaches and splendid warm ocean water, and food!

Los Angeles vs. Miami - 11/15/2009

Miami is one of the most beautiful cities in the country, with its bridges and water access, clear skies and gorgeous beaches. It's vibrant with lots to do on any day or night of the week. Although locals complain about traffic, compared to LA, there is no comparison. However, after relocating here from Los Angeles nearly 6 years ago, Miami has gotten very expensive since we arrived and to make matters worse, the salaries are half of what they are in Los Angeles. This move made sense at the time, but the deal killer is that the taxes in the City of Miami are nearly 3 times ($7,000)vs LA and the homeowner's insurance is nearly 1,000 times more per year ($8,000).

Too many people - 8/30/2009

I was raised in Miami. I love the weather, but this city has become too congested. The job market is the absolute worst and cost of living amounts to an arm and a leg.

Racism is Alive! - 8/17/2009

Maybe I'm naive, but I was shocked to see the level of racism I saw while on vacation in Ft. Lauderdale and Miami. I am a Spanish major and went to Little Havana for the cultural experience. People were looking at me as if I were Fidel himself. At a gas station, a white guy next to me just started calling black people "n******". Give me a break! Be strong, break the status quo, and see people for their personalities, not their skin hues!! Over here, on the West Coast, we've managed to progress beyond this ignorance.

transportation - 7/14/2009

There is a lot of traffic, unless it's late at night. The is a metro-rail which run mostly north/south, but only covers a small part of the city. I haven't taken the buses in a long time, but they usually don't look too crowded.. i don't know if that's a good thing though.

LIVING IN MIAMI FOR OVER 20 YEARS - 6/12/2009

The weather in Miami is very nice for most part of the year, except for the summer months.During the summer it rains a lot. I would say that the best thing about Miami is the weather. The population in Miami is overwhelmingly latin. There are many activities to do but there is not much of a choice as far as exposure to different cultures, because most activities are related to Cubans mainly ,Colombians and other latin american cultures. I am latin, but I would like to have more exposure to other cultures. There are certain areas in Miami that have more of a mix of people, but those are only a couple, like Coral Gables and Miami Beach. Unemployment here is very high and is very competitive. As far as housing goes, for the past few years, the prices of houses have gone up tremendously, and now there is a high percentage of foreclosures. I hope this information helps.

Horrible kloaka - 5/13/2009

I have been living in Miami for 10 months by now. There is corruption everywhere and a lot of crime. I have already been assaulted during daylight at the gas station, robbed, had my house burglarized, become a victim of hit-and run, had to sue real estate agent for selling me the house without a roof, principal at a school refused to employ me further for using a bathroom more than once during the 7-hour work day (one was during my lunch). i tried to appeal citation for trash, they never sent me a hearing notice, just put a lien on my house). Drivers are extremely rude, cut in front of you without any signals, do not how to drive, honk at your if you do not start driving immediately the trafiic light changes, I hear shhotings outside my house every other day, property taxes are outrageous: 7% of the value of the house, small claims litigation costs $ 300 to file. Horrible! ATMs cannot be found anywhere close: only at the banks. When you go to downtown to the opera or ballet, you have to carry mace because all kind of homeless criminals approach you and try to get money from you for parking. Police does not investigate criminal cases unless they are murders. No authority! It is a third world country city, worser than Mexico. I wish I could get out of here, but nobody wants to buy my house. The only good place is Miami Beach and a narrow stretch on The Eastern side of Biscayne Blvd ( US-1). Miami: The myths and realities - 5/13/2009

OK so to anyone who has never been to Miami, here is one thing you must know: Miami FL and Miami Beach FL are TWO SEPARATE AND DIFFERENT PLACES. Miami Beach lies across Biscayne Bay. As for Miami, It is a big, ugly and I do mean ugly, boring ,and overcrowded place. The traffic is the worst you will ever see, Miami has been rated as the worst in the US for road rage. Also, from Thursday to Sunday, the number of drunk drivers on the roads are ridiculous, due to the back and forth from the clubs on the beach and the new club scene downtown, so beware. I grew up in Miami and moved away 12 years ago and can't tell you how glad I am that I did. I still visit my family at least 3 times a year, but the unemployment, dead real estate market and hum drum lifestyle of the city keep me from ever returning. The weather is hot, humid, and it rains for 6 months out of the year. People here are generally very rude no matter where you go or who you are. As for the housing and real estate, it was once horribly overpriced, now you can't give your house away here. All those big ugly condo high rises downtown are pretty much half empty since the market bottomed out here, and it will take at least 4 or 5 years to really bounce back. Public schools are HORRIBLE!!!! Elementary schools are still OK, but once your children reach middle school, you are facing gang activity, poor teachers, overcrowded classrooms and uncaring staff who will only blame you for being a bad parent. Miami BEACH may be a great place to visit, but Miami is just another hum drum example of suburban sprawl run amok. The art scenes here are really nothing special, and outdoor activities are focused only on the beach and boating. The club scene here does not begin to compare to LA, New York or Las Vegas, clubs here are pretty tacky and at least 10 years behind everywhere else, pretty overrated. The clubs are crammed with locals and the only beautiful people you see are out of towners. If you want to raise a family, enjoy talking to your neighbors, want good schools, job stability and a laid back way of life, DON'T MOVE TO MIAMI, you won't find any of those things here. I promise.

Nothing but evil and hatred in the air - 4/21/2009

All that Miami has going for is weather, which is really only nice for about half the year and then becomes so unbearably hot and humid that you don't even want to step outside for more than 30 seconds. Go from one air conditioned cavern to another. Everyone hates each other and is miserable, which might have something to do with the incredible heterogeneous makeup of the population. Forget about friendly people or smiling faces and any public realm worth visiting, other than the Chili's and Friday's in the local commercial district just to get out of the house and see other human beings not behind the wheel of their car while you yell at them for cutting you off in traffic. The movie theater is ok too, but its dark and private in there and you don't have to look at anyone or have anyone look at you and be succumb to their judgement and hatred of you for existing and taking up valuable diminishing resources. People here spend hours a day in their cars driving to no apparent destination wasting gas and space. If they do have somewhere to go, it is not somewhere they want to be going. There is no industry here other than drugs and hospitality, where people with no money are serving those higher up on the food chain than them while on drugs that they buy with the money they make serving people, many of who make the very drugs that their servants are taking to ease the pain of working a meaningless pointless job. Do not question why there are so many people on the roads in the middle of the day no matter what part of town you are in. There is no answer, and if you try to spend time figuring it out you will die a premature death. The unemployment rate is higher than 7 percent, I am sure of that. Driving and drugs is all there is to do here. Not really a city for outdoor people, biking is incredibly dangerous, unless you enjoy fishing overfished waters and are able to afford a floating toy, then I urge you and hope you take my plea seriously. Anywhere but here! Move to northern montana and live in the mountains or go back in time to be an ancient egyptian pyramid building slave. I urge you to listen to all that I say and if you don't know what I'm talking about, some day you will. Some day

Miami is overhyped!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - 4/12/2009

Do not move tp this city, it is overhyped and the landlords are shadedy!!!!! Rental properties that are dumps and ghetto are priced outrageously, 850.00 a month for a place that resembles Beirut or Bagdhad. The decision to move there was one of the worst mistakes of my life; but I corrected it within 48 hours. I got out just as quickly as I arrived

Come and be part of the future, MIami is HOT. - 11/11/2008

Miami is HOT. Yes we get Hurricanes, cost of living is on the high side and there are a lot of languages spoken. If you like normal or simple this is not for you. If you like and are up for the challenge of an international flavor, nice weather, a beautiful city and people, lots of outdoors, What are you waiting? Miami is a city going thru growing pains in steroids, and is best for people with the energy to deal with it. Infrastructure is the best, if not the best in the country, almost everything is new, Highways, Ports, Airports, ect. If you like to travel the airport is close and with direct connections to mayors cities around the world north, south, east or west of the border. If you don´t like to fly take the train or a cruise. With the downturn on the housing market no better time to buy a world class address before they go back up, way up. Sports? wish one you like, we have them all except snow related, for those we just fly in for the fun not the work. Beach? the best in the country(more than one). Air? really clean. Is understandable that even for long time locals is a bit overwhelming, this is not the city is use to be. Is becoming a true world city. I think what happen to friend while in vacation in London tell the view of the world. In a Club someone ask him were was he from, he answer Miami, the guy said ¨What the h are you doing here?¨

A Love Hate Relationship - 10/24/2008

I have been a resident of Miami since 1984 when moved here during my senior year in college. I was attracted by the sun ,sea and wonderful mixture of nationalities. The sun and sea are still great, but I have almost reached my limit with the rudeness of people and everyone assuming I speak Spanish (I am fluent in it, but learned it to travel to Spanish speaking countries). There are many very nice considerate people of races and ethnicities here, but it seems that year after year the number is dwindling (of course that seems to be the norm in many places) Sad really. If you can get beyond this, great. If not and you want to live with the sun and sand, you may want to try other parts of the great state of Florida.
