| Ugh! - 1/6/2010
Milwaukee is a DUMP!
The ENTIRE city except for one tiny pocket on the far east side of the city is run down, old, dangerous and full of really backwards people. However, you could go out to the suburbs and be with the ultra conservative phony Christians. Sorry, Milwaukee is a big city full of A LOT of bumpkins and thugs. The true Mississippi of the north.

| If you want to be a big fish in a small, alcoholic - 12/20/2009
I've lived in Milwaukee, the city and an middle/upper suburb, all my life with the exception of college. If you like a bigger city with a small town feel, where you run into people you like, and don't like, on a regular basis, this is the place for you. And if you can handle one of the worst climates in the country- winter lasts from November-April, and you can expect 2 months of summer weather if you're lucky- then you will do just fine here. Most activities revolve around drinking. That's just a way of life here. So if you enjoy a fun loving, sports centered, overall friendly, albeit simplistic and close minded, alcohol-centered city with a terrible climate, Milwaukee, WI is the place for you. I, on the other hand, am looking to move as soon as possible. Cheers!

| A great place to live - 12/9/2009
Milwaukee is very diverse. Minorities are the majority. The politics under Dem rules and every cultral's celebration is honored.
It snows here in the winter and it gets really cold here. Our summers are short and are winters are long. If you move here invest in a snow blower a sholver and least a mid-size-car!

| Drug Law - 12/2/2009
I agree with the new law I think that inmate need a better direction to help them in the world. Treatment, education, and job training is a better result then prison. Most inmate have not had the experience to work or even was thought the ways of life in surviving. Giving them a chance to inprove there life would be a step way from the life style that they were use to living. There are a lot of good father, husband, and brother in prison who was only tring to make a living for their family. Please help them to learn other ways of helping their family instead of sending them to prison.

| Not my cup of Tea - 9/27/2009
Milwaukee, as cities go, isn't too bad, but it isn't for me. I am more of a small town person so I am not attracted by all of the big city charm. I don't know if the crime rate is any worse here than in any other big city, but it's way too much for me.

| Can be great but, I hate winter - 6/2/2009
Honestly,
The housing costs aren't that bad but, where I live in this city I constantly have to get out of my house and ask people to turn the stereo down in their house. It's constantly bumping bass into my house and with a 1 year old, that makes it really annoying. Especially when they are trying to sleep. Down the street they are dealing drugs (at least that's the conclusion some of our neighbors and us came up with) We are saving to move to another city. I also do not like the winter time. I am tired of shoveling snow and getting stuck in it. summers here can be great but, Texas is calling me.

| I think Milwaukee is amazing - 2/6/2009
Milwaukee is an amazing place. I'm not sure why so many people complain about it. Yeah, it's cold. Yeah, we drink. Yeah, we tailgate. Yeah, we're sportsfans. That's who we are. We love a good deal. We're all about a summer picnic or a fall campfire. We like the local, small bars and festivals like Summerfest. It's NOT Chicago. It's NOT LA. It's NOT NYC. It's Milwaukee. We're appreciated because of that. I know there cons to living here, but just like any other city. We're a little segregated and we still need to rebuild some of our streets and the downtown area, but I think we have to award some credit to the city's efforts. They've reconstructed a major part of the highways, they've revamped Milwaukee Street (with an upscale night scene), there is newer housing on North Avenue, new shopping districts, museums, and more. What it all boils down to is, if you're looking to move here, do your research as you would any other place. Find a good area to live such as the places Keith has mentioned. There are a lot of amazing things to keep busy with.
PS-Keith, my mom is from the Czech Republic! :)

| Look elsewhere... - 9/29/2008
Take a look at the statistics. High crime, high unemployment, high taxes, racial tension, poor schools, and so on...pretty dismal.
Despite what may look like "diversity" (by way of our ethnic festivals), Milwaukee was recently rated as second most segregated city in the US. All that's been said about racial disparities and quality of life for non-whites here isn't exaggeration.
Outrageous property taxes. Long, bitter-cold winters. Public schools that are sub-par and dangerous. The beaches are sometimes shut down due to sewage overflow problems.
Some of these reviews say "It's close to Chicago / Madison." If you like either of those cities, go live there. Milwaukee is not like either of them and not really close enough that it matters. Proximity means nothing...Gary, IN is close to Chicago, but you don't hear anyone raving about Gary, IN just because it's close to CHI. Similar idea here.
People here are aloof, reserved, and into their "cliques." If you like going to meet people in bars, there are no shortages of opportunities or venues to do that here; unfortunately, there are few alternatives. Milwaukee is a big city with a small town feel...and that sounds like it'd be cool, but it really isn't.
As far as colleges go, Marquette is a decent school but very expensive, and the campus itself has lots of crime problems. UWM is composed of 50% kids who couldn't get into Madison and spend their free time drinking cheap beer in slum housing, and 50% non-traditional students who just show up to go to class, then leave. Campus is dead; there's no community there.
Milwaukee has some OK things...some good restaurants...some museums...decent music acts now and then...but nothing really world-class. I've talked with a lot of locals who say that they'd rather get a root canal than go to Summerfest. Even those things that people have mentioned as "plusses" are pretty mediocre.
I've lived here for 7 years, and all I can think about is moving. The city feels dull, lifeless, flat, and uninspiring. And it feels 100 times worse once the weather sets in.

| Crime in Milwaukee - 9/3/2008
The crime level in Milwaukee seems to be at an all time high unfortunately. I've grown up here and am now ready to move south after 36 years. The job opportunities have decreased so much, that my 17 & 18 year olds cant even find a job.

| Not too proud - 6/8/2008
I find Milwaukee to be a very segregated place. Different ethnic groups live on different sides of City. The jobs have been leaving the City one by one. The lack of training and the W2 system has created handicaps for the advancement of the people. I find that people can live better off of W2 than if they work. Yet if you go that route you stand a chance of selling your self for a life that isn't the greatest. A Catch 22, simply because the working class struggles so much more to acquire the things one deserves. The school system hasn't been the greatest. Mainly due to the students and the vast population lack interest in education. The opportunities for job growth and advancements are very limited. It is amazing how people will and can stand in the way of your growth. The lack of quality jobs, professional opportunities, jealousy concerning youth verses older, and racial divide has made the terms "crabs in the bucket" & "Cut Throat" a mere reality, which is a night mare.
In a semi beautiful place that was once known for the manufacturing, brewers, and a quality place to raise a family has gone down hill. Im speaking from my point of view as a native of this place. Most of my family has moved away, yet im still here in the struggle. My day will come soon.
The surrounding areas are nice, Brown Deer, Wauwatosa, & West Allis. I like the suburb areas which are outside of Milwaukee County, Mequon & Brookfield, but they aren't for African Americans, (speaking in terms of events they exclude African Americans. So A.A. have to conform to fit the social dominating class).
Speaking with people that have relocated here from other places. They tend to like it here for a few reasons.
1. They are from a smaller towns so there is a lot to do here.
2. The crime here is less then where ever they are from.
3. They move in the Gentrified areas (Downtown Milwaukee, River West & Brewers Hill area which is the east side), or the outskirts of the city which hides the facts of what is really going on in the City Of Milwaukee.
So if you choose to move here for a job or for the three reasons other people have moved here you will be fine. But if the other concerns I mention are important to you then I would recommend you to stay away. Worst case Move to Brookfield, Mequon or the other surrounding areas of Milwaukee County. Expect to pay more because their is a price tag with the quality of living.
Im open to questions, comments, & concerns. I feel a lot needs to change. It starts with proper training for jobs and creating jobs & job opportunities. Once this happens people will begin to take education seriously. It also doesnt help when you have well educated people working low level jobs, because there are limited to no opportunities. Nothing is impossible because I think in a 10 - 15 year window change can happen. Its 2008 now. I dont have that kind of time to stick it out. I need somethings to happen for the now.

| i have lived in milwaukee most of my life, but mo - 4/10/2008
they think by building apartment building and condo buildings that milwaukee will remain a thriving young family middle class. allis chalmers, caterpillar, milwaukee boiler, babcock + wilcox , inland ryerson, rexnord , a o smith and many other factories that held people togeather with unions are gone. it isnt primarily europeans that live in milwaukee anymore. all the houses are old now and it seems milwaukee is just an over crowded area. press steel tank company just closed down also. the only thing that may hold this area constructive would be if alot of people there would take up the trades, carpenters, masons, plumbers so they can rebuild this old city.

| Happy Days was just a TV show - 3/22/2008
The only good part of living in Milwaukee are the summer festivals and Summerfest by the lakefront. We tolerate 9 months of crappy weather for 3 months of glorious summer. Lots to do here in summer. Winter is horrible. As of today 3/22/08, we got dumped with 14 inches of snow. Crime rate is bad, education even worse. Job opportunities good for those in construction only. Property taxes very high, sales tax 6%, state income tax high. Wisconsin is a beautiful state, with lots of parks, lakes and forests, but the weather stinks and you find yourself pasty pale and hibernating for many months.
