Housing market - 10/5/2007

Although the market has taken a turn there is still an abundance of properties to be bought and sold. For some this may actually be the best time ever

Relocating...NEED ADVICE! - 10/2/2007

Our family wants to move to the beach! I am 15 in my sophomore year. My brother is 24, he is a truck driver. My dad works in construction and roofing. We currently live in Western NC and the employment has dried up and we are ready for a major change. We visit myrtle beach every summer and stay at Ocean lakes in our RV. I hear both good and bad things from the reviews about mb employment, crime and the school system. We have been researching online for land in MB and Surfside. Im having trouble getting quotes on lots and finding residential communties. Anything readers of this can tell me about MB or Surfside would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! Lisa you can Email me @ cky_chic281@yahoo.com

Spring Break - 9/30/2007

I'm part of the first wave of Baby Boomers who have moved South. I love the weather here, mild seasons and just below the major snow line. However, anyone who was not born here (the 'Native' stickers have arrived)should be advised of a few things: 1. You must be willing to be called 'Yankee' repeatedly. It doesn't matter that your manners are impeccable and above reproach, if you can't claim everyone as your 'cousin' and grew up as part of the 'good old buddy' network, then you're a 'Yankee'. 2. You must like 'drama'. There is a lot of Southern drama, fueled by constant gossip. Gossip is what the locals consider intelligent discussion. 3. You must like gays. There is a large, active, hardworking group of gay citizens, which fuels its own circulating gossip circle and drama. The most drama comes from Southern born gays. The gay citizens are sincerely involved in charities, fundraisers, and helping their own, too. 4. You must like hypocrisy. There are as many churches as there are strip joints. The holier-than-thou church members spend the week boozing and making dinner out of free food at daily Happy Hours. Keeping track of who is sleeping with whom is the main ingredient in the gossip. 5. You must like to Shag. It does not matter what music is playing, how fast or slow the beat, there is only one dance here, the basic Shag step. 6. You must be willing to keep your opinoins to yourself, or be part of the gossip. The area is changing rapidly, and will continue to grow quickly, with a lot more Yankees moving in all the time.....thank God!

way too much rent - 6/21/2007

I live here in myrtle beach , it is nice but there is alot not being said. 1) the rent is way too high and there r money hungry people here. a 2 br is 1500 with out lights, gas, cable, phone. 2) people are very rude. they dont like to help anyone. 3) if u have a pet, u might have to get rid of it, not alot of places likes animals. 4) it is all about skinny people and sex, that is what comes here. if you r looking for a cheap place to rent then its not here or if u r looking for friends, not here again. you will have to go to a place that is very nice, and friendly, and cheap.

Long-term resident - 3/17/2007

I have been in the Myrtle Beach area for the last 10 years. I love living at the beach and find the area very pleasent. Myrtle Beach and the surrounding areas have grown tremendously in the last 10 years and only continues to improve. I went through the public school system here and will enter the nursing profession in May with a BSN. Motivated students do well here and receive the education they need and deserve. The Real Estate and construction businesses are booming in the Myrtle Beach area. Compared to other states, the cost of living is lower in the Myrtle Beach area. The difference in cost of living usually compensates for lower salaries. Overall, the Myrtle Beach area has a lot to offer. The resturants are out of this world and in 10 years I still have not been to them all. The transient nature of the area offers interaction with a diverse range of people. I urge relocators to take time to research the area.

I am correcting another poster's comment - 12/31/2006

A poster who does not like the area wrote that cops are too afraid to stop the bikers during the two biker weeks. The poster may not like motorcycles, but the bikers have a legal right to be there. So what does the poster want the cops to do? Break the law and kick people out of town who do not fit the demographics that the poster would like to see there? As the daughter of Horray County (Myrtle Beach) police officer, I can assure you that they are not afraid. They monitor the situation and enforce the law when needed. When following the law, which is most of the time, bikers have a right to be there.

Economics 101 - 12/2/2006

Upon all the research that I have conducted, no one has yet to make any valid, precise statements regarding this city. I have moved from Maine to Myrtle Beach and I can tell you right now, you don't have a clue about harsh living until you live in a state that is labeled at the bottom of the list of states to live. I would rather live here than back in Maine, but no matter where you go you will get crime and unemployment because of the population adjustments and the "tank effect". If you have too many people living too closely together, things like that happen. Before anyone moves anywhere, do your research online. I don't blame the areas of choice more than the people that move into areas such as this because they did not do the research necessary to ensure a satisfactory move. There is enough information from Forbes.com, CNNMoney.com and this web site to help people determine if any place is the best place. I like the heat, humidity and everything else about the south. When you live in a state that has a very low population, high taxes, and high unemployment with an average snow fall of 8-9 feet a year, you will appreciate the higher quality of life in the south. You talk about rude, come up here where if you don't speak like them, they don't want to talk to you. Any hint of a southern twang or accent unlike their own and even finding jobs is difficult. If your last name is unfamiliar, the job market is even harder regardless of your education background. Oh and one more thing, I was making 13k a year working at a wood mill in Maine with 102 credits in college, a 3.9 GPA and 8 certificates, so let's talk about hard living while here in Myrtle Beach it's not that difficult making a decent living with the right educational background.

Worst decision ever - 8/18/2006

Employment is limited to hotels and food industry, biggest mistake I ever made moving back here. There is very and I stress very little employment for office workers here and competition is high for those jobs.I moved from Ft. Worth TX back to this area (which is where I grew up) worst decision ever. You are extremely lucky to make $8.00 an hour here

A perfect place to live. - 5/27/2006

I moved to the Grand Strand area five years ago, it was the best thing I ever done. This is a fantastic place to raise a family, retire, or just live. My daughters go to the St. James school district; and I am extremely impressed. I am a Real Estate Agent, so if you are thinking of relocating, buying, or selling a home in the Grand Strand area, I would love to help direct you in the right way. Quite possibly the worst place in the USA - 1/3/2006

I'm not sure, it could be up there with Gary, Indiana, or Detroit, but I moved to Myrtle Beach a few years ago, and once I left I never even went back again. Even on vacation. Period. Crime is incessant. People are rude, and since it is so touristy, most people use the place as their own personal sewer. Bugs, including roaches, are everywhere. Billboards advertising fast food are every few feet on every highway. Strip mall development is the king here. There is nothing positive about living here, even the weather is bad- oppressive heat and humidity during the summer, and it gets cold enough here in winter. And when the motorcycle gangs come in, they rule the town, and the cops are too afraid to stop them. I would live in the middle of the desert before I lived here again.

Great to visit, terrible to live - 11/25/2005

This is a great place to come to on vacation, lots of golf, restaurants, amusement parks and shopping. There is a terrible job market and the schools are the worst in the nation. OK to live once retired, not so much for young families.

Myrtle Beach is a big illusion of escaping. It has an incredible amount of crime which is held down by the media due to the affect it may have on tourism. Truth be told it is not a safe place to raise your children. Just look at the statistics. They don't lie.
