| New York... New York - 7/12/2007
The "big apple" is becoming too expensive and crowded. It's still probably one of the most exciting cities in the world, but that's just not enough anymore. The older I get, the more I'd like to slow down. Bright lights, a city that never sleeps - Not Interested!

| New York City - 7/8/2007
New York is my favorite city in the country and I consider myself lucky to live here. It is, however, most definitely not for everybody. You must consider your likes and dislikes carefully. The cultural offerings, extraordinary variety in restaurants and shopping, architecture, ethnic enclaves, parks and being within striking distance of some beautiful beaches are the high points for me. For many people these will not be sufficient to outweigh crowds, noise, smaller living spaces and higher cost of living. Obviously if you are not a city person to begin with you will not even consider living here but even if you do live in a big city elsewhere in the US the lifestyle in New York is still going to be different from what you are used to. If you like to explore, enjoy making new discoveries and don't dwell too much on the negatives then take the plunge. You can always move out if you hate it.

| City girl w/ travel exp in south - 7/6/2007
I've lived in NYC Manhattan/Bronx all my 25 yrs of life. I went to a private Catholic school, and attended one of the TOP universities in the Nation (not good at spelling, LOL). I've also travelled to many southern states and this is my opinion...I Love NY, but...
1. Yes it is stressful at times but the convenience of being able to travel, work, entertain by simply jumping on a train, bus, makes the quality enjoyable, unlike the south where you NEED a car and entertainment is limited (from a diverse standpoint). You have Museums, Zoos, Arts, Dance studios, Broadway shows, Off brdwy, Parks, Recreation facilities, Skating, Rock climbing, Wine tasting, ANYTHING & EVERYTHING you can imagine doing you can do it here.
2. Yes its expensive, NYC is BUSINESS, and you are Paying for it. We have some of the best Schools, police dept, High paying jobs (HS degree 30K+, College degree 50K+, Grad degree 80K+) but the curb appeal, culture, and safety is what you are paying for. I am currently thinking of getting my MBA and I have atleast 4 universities to choose from that all Rank as Top in the NATION...With that said comes a bigger starting salary. Even if you don't have a degree there are sooo many Sales positions, and Trade jobs paying top dollare, BUT there is competition since we have a HIGH POPULATION. I don't worry about that because Entreprenuers are going left & right.
The key is to live below your means.
How to do that you ask? Get a roommate, live in one of the 5 boros, or border NJ, or long island. buy bulk, save, save, save, find free events, they exist! if you go to school get scholarship! a must, bargain, bargain, bargin.
Saftey - key-any place too far out into a particular boro is usually not good, hence the apts closer to manhattan are more expensive, safer, culturally diverse. Manhattan - i think good all over during the day, but the freaks do come out at night. Bronx - um, East side along 6 train better than the rest. Brooklyn - um, I personally don't like it, but I hear areas are becoming better (ones closer to Manhattan). Queens - pretty good don't go too far. Staten Island - who lives there? LOL its Ok, you don't here much on the news about them. Long Island - too far for me but its big and has some good areas. Border NJ - bergen county, Hudson county the best.
Now about the southern states...I love diversity! and I simply do NOT see that enough in parts of GA, NC, SC, VA, MD, DC, MI. I am a city girl, therefore I find myself g

| manhattan rentals - 7/1/2007
Rentals in manhattan are going out of sight; in addition the cost of owning real estate in all the 5 boroughs is increasing as well. For example one bedroom apartment rentals in manhattan start at around$3000 if you can find one; studios from $2400 in some of the nicer buildings. Vacancies are under one percent. Also manhattan apartments prices are almost $1000 a square foot!!
Just amazing that so many people want to live here!!

| 2nd least helpful city in the world - 6/18/2007
The "Financial Times" newspaper had an article on some researchers who went all over the world, and studied cities based on how "helpful" people were. For instance, someone would pretend to be blind and trying to cross the street, or ask for directions, or struggle with a package. It turns out, of all the big cities in the world, New York is the second "least helpful" (Kuala Lampur is the least helpful). The most helpful were: Rio de Janeiro, San Jose (Costa Rica), Vienna, Austria, and Cogenhagen, Denmark.

| Cost of living - 6/13/2007
Living in New YOrk is extremely expensive but wages are comparably higher and you don't have to buy a car and worry about insurance and gas for the most part. I live in Brooklyn and if you're willing to make compromises and find alternatives then it is doable.

Hope you like congestion. It's a crowded city, like being in an elevator, with ten favorite strangers, all the time.

| Big City Life - 6/5/2007
After a lifetime of living in an outer borough of NYC, my wife and I seek living close to nature with 4 different seasons. Big city living has its advantages namely job opportunities, many cultural sites and events, large universities, good public transportation etc. But, I must agree with the old saying: " great place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there." As NYC continues to grow in population, there will be more traffic congestion, more demands on city services, more taxation, and more unfriendlyness!! I hope that I don't discourage a young couple considering NYC, nevertheless they should be aware of living conditions.

| only for the rich and snobbish - 5/23/2007
I have lived in New York City for most of my entire life. The only exceptions when I was stationed in North Carolina and I lived in New Jersey for a couple of years. There is so much hype to this place that it makes me sick. This is a city where exploitation is incredible. Everything from taxes to housing prices to crime. Its rated one of America's safest cities but the climate here is very violent. I should know, I've been a Police Officer for over sixteen years. The attitude that people have here is pure nasty. It seems that many people have a chip on thier shoulder. I retire in four years and I just want to live in a place where there is little crime, people respect each other, house prices are reasonable and life is'nt all about status quo. I read about many other places to live and most seem almost as bad as here. I f anyone reads this and has a suggestion about a good place to live, please. For those who think about coming here without really planning it out and no income or potential for earning a very high salary, save yourself the trouble. I cannot tell you the many times I have encountered people who have come here from all over this country and have fallen on bad times because its so hard to make ends meet. Its a shame, it really is.

| Customer Service - 5/11/2007
Anyone who complains about customer service in NYC should be required to work a retail for a living here for at least two months. Cashier, behind any type of counter, driving a cab, ANYTHING that involves dealing with the public. You'll get past your overly-sensitive attitude in a hurry. The .02 seconds you spend being nice will create a space for someone else to cut ahead of you, for people to get upset at waiting for you, or a moment for things to go wrong and delay you from getting your job done. Which, of course, will be your fault.

| Great opportunities but .... - 5/7/2007
Cost of living is really high here. However, you can get around being on budget. But why doing this when you can't afford it? It's no fun if you have to stay home and not going out with your friends. So, if you can't afford it, you should think twice before moving here.
Things I like: access to museums, shows, activities; 24-hr mass transit; many job opportunities if you are into finance, banking, law, acting, arts; convenience of city living.
Things I don't like: lack of open and green space, traffic congestion and pollution, noise, high cost of living, competitiveness on everything. Although there are many outstanding people here who are smart, decent, driving, energetic, nice and friendly, there are ten times more people who are just on the opposite end of the spectrum. It's quite a pain to have to deal with the latter everyday.
Things I hate: customer services or almost any customer representative I have interacted with in person or over the phone in any store or any business - they are so provokingly rude (sometimes inhumanely), careless, and incompetent at their jobs (or stupid).

| Best Place comment. - 5/7/2007
New York is a wealth centric metropolis. New Yorkers elected a billionaire as their mayor, and they seem to love him if you believe published polls on the matter. However, NYC police staring salary is 25K per year, rising to 60K after five years. Firefighters have a similar salary. Housing is incredibley expensive, as time moves forward, working class people will not be able to afford to live near they city they work in. I love the town, but I may just love the memory of the town I grew up in. Yet, more young people are moving in (sharing living spaces, it seems and sharing the rent) , the population of the city increases each year. Jobs are here, just not affordable housing. Raising a family here is a daunting challenge.
