| I Love New York, Brooklyn Bound - 5/6/2007
NYC is a wonderful place to live, work, vacation, etc. I have lived in Brooklyn a borough of NYC for my entire life. And while I enjoy traveling to European cities (especially Paris) and have visited many US cities. I have to say none have managed to pull me away from NYC for too long. Many have better weather, like San Diego but I don't think I would ever be able to live in a place where the thought of snow wasn't a possibility at Christmastime, or where I couldn't walk up 5th Ave and see the skaters at Rockefeller Center. In the summer it can be hot and humid but a short drive takes me to miles and miles of beautiful beaches.
The cost of living is high but so is the chance of landing a good job, getting into a good school or seeing a good doctor in a first rate hospital.
Commuting by car is a headache but the subway, express busses, and railways are reliable and safe alternatives even if they aren't squeaky clean. It’s the subway! Despite what grouchy people may tell you New Yorkers are not rude just busy. If you need something, you will find that most will be more than willing to assist you if asked. If you don't approach them, they will busily be on their way.
If you are thinking of living or visiting, know that it is expensive, and lively and a bit crowded but it is worth the experience in so many ways. By the way, live in one of the boroughs its cheaper, less congested, has a greater sense of community and Manhattan is just a bridge or tunnel away.
AA.

| Upper East Side - 5/6/2007
I like the proximity to Central Park, the Museums (Museum mile), and the East River Walk-way. Asphalt Green is an excellent gym. The local restaurants are ok. Crime in NYC is an endemic problem, but its my impression the people committing the crimes are for the most part, not from the neighborhood, which is irrelevant if you are a crime victim.
The people in the neighborhood are typically single, self-absorbed with a scattering of familys around somewhat akin to a sunny day with blue skys and scatterings of cumulous clouds here and there. Private schools are a viable option to avoid the limitations of the PS. Housing is affordable but prohibitive for most. Transportation around about is excellent. Overall, I feel pretty safe despite the occassional east side rapist and bar room brawl. Speaking of which, the bars on 2nd Ave are pretty much a singles scene and impart a loud and sometimes drunkenly raucous quality on Thus, Fri and especially Sat evenings.

| Expensive but great quality of life - 5/6/2007
New York is expensive. Those of us who live here seem crazy sometimes to outsiders--and to ourselves. Expecially with 20% rent increases, and sky high condo prices. But where else can you ride your bike around what's perhaps the world's most populated island, walk along rivers, dine at
out of the way funky places, and sit under cherry blossoms in several
Botanic Gardens. Get a russian bath, and walk along ocean boardwalks.
All in the same day. No dirving neceesary--or desired. Great medical care.
Plenty of options for dating. So yes it's crazy but I've lived in Europe, Asia, East and West Coasts--and this is the only place for me.

| NYC Job Market - 4/28/2007
Despite reports that the NYC unemployment rate has declined, there is still a shortage of jobs here that began just prior to 9/11 and continues to this day (the exception being fields such as accounting, which will always have an abundance of job openings).

| The grass isnt greener in the south!!!!!! - 4/23/2007
Seems housing all over the country is out of control, but try living in FL. where rents and mortgages ( in a nice, clean, safe place)is expensive as well and the wages are the lowest in the nation(w/degree)(low skill job market), you must own a car, avg nite life, being single sucks, less than avg. arts and ent., literacy rate super low, traffic is horrible for a small city, and education is an embarrassment, dont forget about the hurrricans. A lot of NYers here are looking forward to moving back north I dont think I want to live in NY but I,m getting the hell outta Tampa, FL!!!!!!

| Re: The MOST arrogant egomaniacs live in NYC! - 4/22/2007
As someone who has also traveled extensively and also lived in many, mnay places, I have to completely disagree with Paris' posting.
New York is not the easiest place in the world to live, but my past 10 years here have been some of the best years of my life.
Perhaps Paris' attitude has a little something to do with her less than rave review of New York. Calling the people who ride the subway each "low lifes" and making racial remarks certainly won't get you anywhere here in the city. I ride the subway to work every day because I don't have to own a car here. My ride is usually fine, unless it's extremely crowded and then it's just bearable. But I don't consider my fellow passengers "low Lifes". Perhaps you should have lived in Connecticut, or Long Island, or New Jersey, where most of the people who fear this city escape to, commuting to earn a living. Perhaps your experience would have been better. In any case, it's not shared by the majority of people who came here and choose to live in one of the best cities in the world.

| The MOST arrogant egomaniacs live in NYC! - 4/15/2007
Well, being a very well-travelled person, who visited and LIVED in many countries, I am finally proudly announcing my moving out-ta-here, after over 7 years that could be spent way better elsewhere, despite all career achievments I have made!
Here is a word about "endless career opportunities":Thing is, you must be a specific type of person to survive here...you must like licking other's asses in hopes that one day someone will lick yours. If this scenario Okay with you, then this city is truly a "land of oppErtunity"...But be prepared to face the most arrogant and demanding asses anywhere in the world. It is all about how low you are willing to go and how high you are planning to get....but not everyone may be willing to go that low.Oh yeah, in case you are an attractive female buiding a career in NYC, be prepared to fight back against those sleazy creatures they call "men" here.
However, if you are Okay with "everyday" Starbucks type of job or any job that pays below 30K,get ready to not simply survive, but find yourself way below poverty level....but wait, you still get to enjoy wonderful things like subway rides with angry low-lifes just like you....
The only place in NYC for an educated white person would be over-priced/over-populated Upper East/West Sides, filled with most arrogant republicans egos in the country. But be sure to make way into upper six figures to fit into that mold.
If you are planning to finally raise a family and have a life, this is the worst place ever. But if you are addicted to getting wasted in cheap bars in the Village and having sex with whoever is contributing to the "melting pot" after a few shots of cheap vodka (the feature lifestyle of young folks here), then this place might be the answer. It all depends on what stage in your life you are.
That's all:)

| New York - An Outstanding Global City - 4/15/2007
Yes, NYC is expensive, crowded, and all of those other things that people complain about. But frankly, after living in other cities from Atlanta to San Francisco and up to Chicago, it really is the best that this country has to offer. It is the only city in the US where one can experience the entire world without really leaving. All leading world cities are expensive and crowded but with a little imagination and the ability to adapt, one can enjoy the experience of living in a world-class city such as NYC. There is a place for everyone and I'm very proud to say that NYC is the place for me.

| Housing continues to be critical - 4/3/2007
New York City continues to face a severe shortage of housing for middle and lower income families. Despite lots of talk from the Bloomberg Administration, there still has not been sufficient action to come to terms with the fact that the face of New York will be dramatically changed if it loses its middle class.

| Cost of Living - 3/22/2007
Cost of living is high. Major cost will probably be your living expenses like your rent or morgage. Years ago you were able to move a little further out from New York City to Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx in exchange for cheaper rent and more space. No such luck today.

New York is dirty, noisy and stressful. It's one of the most unhealthy places to live in the country. There is a lot of crazy, lowlife people with little to no moral values.
