Quality of Life - 6/22/2006

I've lived in a few places in the US, and NYC was my favorite. Yes its expensive. EXTREMELY expensive at that, but you get what you pay for. There is lots of stuff to do such as beaches, bike riding, lots of parks, sight seeing, plays, concerts, lots of places to eat, great (& cheap) transportation system, sports, and lots more. There is no need for a car here, which gives you plenty of opportunity for excercise & save some $$$. Is it busy? Of course it is! What do you expect with a city with over 8 million people, nevermind all the people that travel to the city for work & tourists. This city is not for lazy people and as for people dying to get out of here... if it was so bad, they would leave. I'm looking forward to moving back in a few years. I LOVE NYC!

THINKING OF MOVING - 6/21/2006

I'm from Michigan and I'm thinking of moving to Texas in a few years, and got a few questions. Hows the public transportation there? Is it safe for a single female? and hows the economy?

gjoanscott - 6/20/2006

New York is one of the most expensive places to live and as someone who is nearing retirement age, I am hoping to relocate. Life is very good in terms of cultural events but in the long run it not a place where one would want to grow old. I was born and raised here but hopefully I will be able to find work...as I will have to continue working for another five to ten years, and a relatively nice place to live to spend the rest of my life. I am also thinking of subletting my NY apartment or renting it out to others on a weekly basis when I move.

lefferts gardens, brooklyn - 6/11/2006

we live in a 1 bedroom coop apartment. My wife my 4 year old and 11 month old. I'm 33 years old and I love Brooklyn. There i s a great deal of diversity, art, and culture. These are good things to have but now we spend most, if not all of our time attending to our children. We are finding it difficult, with the lack of quality affordable education, high cost of living and not enough green space, we are begining to look elsewhere. We want to own a house, we want to not have to navigate garbage and dog poop when we walk down the streets, we want good schools, and more green space.

Park Slope Brooklyn New York - 6/8/2006

Park Slope is amazing. I just moved there from Manhattan and absoutely love it. I still work in Manhattan and so get my skyscrapper fix everyday, but actually live in a wonderful community. Rent is a little cheaper than Manhattan but you get a ton more space. The restaurants are cheaper and as good or better than Manhattan. Many have outside garden space.

NYC public transportation - 6/6/2006

NYC Public transportation is set up to usher commuters in and out of Manhattan. Not easy getting around the boro's without a car. Not easy getting froma boro to any boro other than Manhattan without a car. Forces you to do everything in Manhattan, except live there because housing is too expensive. It is usually reliable. Flooding will cause the system to shut down unexpectedly on occasion. Public transportation is amazing in Manhattan. You can get anywhere in Manhattan by train. It is a little more difficult going crosstown rather than uptown.

Quality of life here stinks! - 6/3/2006

I am a New Yorker born and raised-and I'm looking to move as far away as possible from here! Over time, the quality of life here has diminished. Very difficult to find "real" people for friendship and/or relationships. Most people here are playing the "user/taker" game. This particular problem has grown worse since 9/11. Also, the pace of the city has increased-people rushing everywhere for no reason, rudely pushing on subways and buses, pushing to be first on any line anywhere. It is unbelivably stressful here. The air quality in the 5 boroughs has also gotten worse since 9/11. It is very difficult to breathe on humid and/or hot days. And now it seems that everyone has a cold no matter what the season. And because people are afraid to take days off from work to recuperate, the germs are constantly being spread- in the office, on subways and buses, etc. In addition, it is almost impossible to find affordable housing here. People like me who have lived here awhile (and who are not affluent and who don't want roommates)live in the outer boroughs (Queens, Bronx, Brooklyn and Staten Island). A one-bedroom aparment in a lousy neighborhood in these areas can average $900-$1400/month in rent, excluding utilities. Forget Manhattan-it's way too expensive for the average working person. I work too hard for what I have here, and want more than I get for what I pay. So I'm on this site to find a place to relocate to. Wish me luck...

A tale of 2 cities - 5/17/2006

It's ridiculous to talk about NYC as 1 city. There is a wide variety of neighborhoods from Douglaston, a ritzy enclave in Queens to the hell holes of the South Bronx, Bed/Sty, Harlem and Hells Kitchen. Of course most people think of Manhattan as NYC. There's just about every service you could want but I can't understand how people can live in that overcrowded, loud, smelly, dirty mess.

you definitely do NOT need a car! - 5/13/2006

Just noticed a post saying "transportation is not good. Definitely need a car" -- which, as a long time New Yorker, I find absolutely bizarre. New York is one of the very few US cities where most people do not need, and indeed do not want, a car.

Great City, however the housing situation is less than ideal. If you are of limited resources, like myself, your selection of neighborhoods and apartments are severely limited. Very high cost of living.

Great neighborhood ; younger on the east side, older and quieter, and more convenient for transportation as you get closer to Madison Avenue. Expensive to buy or rent.

Native NYer says NYC is too expensive, crowded, di - 4/7/2006

As a native New Yorker (born and raised in NYC) I can tell you that NYC has tons of stuff to do and see (theaters, museums, bars, restaurants, dancing clubs, parks, etc...) but the cost of living is astronomical. You spend most of your time working just to pay your rent and other personal expenses. So you are left with little money to enjoy the activities the city has to offer. NYC and its surrounding boroughs are dirty, crowded and noisy. The people are not friendly and a good number of the residents in NYC are really uncivilized. The pace of life is hectic so you really don't have time to stop and smell the flowers (or garbage). I now live in Monroe, NY (about 50 miles from NYC) but in a couple of years I will be moving my family out of NY all together. We will be going South (North Carolina or Florida). NYC is a great place to visit but a terrible place to live especially to raise a family.
