I've lived in NYC for 15 years, mostly south of 34th street. I rember what it was like back in the Dinken days, where drug pedlers ruled most parks (and most of 6th ave) and 42nd street was actually a sceezy, but fun place to visit. Then there were the Sienfeld years, when crime rates were dropping, making the city more accessible, but all the fun stuff was still there - the meat packing district was full of freaks and the lower east side was still a haven for punk bars. Alas, gentrification is gradually turning my beloved city into another giant mall, like the rest of the country, with starbucks and gaps everywhere and all the local flavor place like chinatown and little italy gradually replaced. If i were you I would visit NY soon, before the transformation is complete and it turns finally into a place just like wherever you are visiting from...

| Stop Moaning! - 12/11/2005
A LOT OF AMERICANS THINK THAT NEW YORK IS VERY EXPENSIVE, HOWEVER, WHEN YOU COMPARE IT TO WHERE WE LIVE IN LONDON, IT'S CHEAP AS CHIPS. OUR HOUSE, CAR, INSURANCE ETC. PRICES ARE DOUBLE AND TRIPLE WHAT THE AVERAGE NEW YORKER PAYS. SINCE YOU HAD GIULIANI, THERE IS HARDLY ANY CRIME IN NEW YORK NOW.
ANYWAY, EVERY MAJOR CITY HAS THE LONG COMMUTES AND DELAYED TRAINS, MORE ROADWORKS AND CRIME. IT IS A FACT OF LIFE, UNLESS YOU WANT TO LIVE IN A BUBBLE IN MONTANA.

| Nothing New - 12/8/2005
NYC is like anywhere else, it has it's positives and negative. I think everyone should experience NYC in some form or another, that being said I think native NY'ers need to experience something other than NYC too, especially the natives that have never been as far as the public transit system can take them.
I like the shopping mostly and the anonymity you have while there mostly. Somebody mentioned migrants complaining when coming to NYC, you haven't heard complaining until you've heard a native NY'er who happens to get outside of NYC.
Nothing new.

| THE GREATEST CITY - 12/1/2005
I'M A NATIVE NEW YORKER, BORN & RAISED IN QUEENS. I'M 29, AND WILL NEVER LEAVE. THIS IS THE GREATEST CITY IN THE WORLD. WHEN IMMIGRANTS FROM OTHER COUNTRIES COME HERE TO LIVE, THEY TRY TO MAKE THE BEST OF IT. BUT WHEN OTHER AMERICANS FROM THE SOUTH OR MIDWEST COME HERE, THEY COMPLAIN A LOT. WHY DO THEY STAY HERE THEN? YES, IT'S EXPENSIVE, BUT I'M SURE THEY KNEW THAT BEFORE COMING. ALSO, THEY ALL MIGRATE TO MANHATTAN! EVERYONE KNOWS MANHATTAN IS THE MOST EXPENSIVE AREA! WHY DON'T THEY MOVE TO QUEENS OR BROOKLYN? IT'S DIFFERENT WHEN YOU'RE A NATIVE. YOU APPRECIATE THE LITTLE THINGS MORE...

| Stay Away..... - 10/16/2005
....unless you earn over $100k.
The housing prices are not expensive --- SARCASTIC is a better term. You have to LOOK for people who pay rent on their own.
A visitor might be impressed with the city's huge transportation system, but if you have to commute everyday, you'll eventually learn how dirty and inefficient it can be.
If you're getting mugged, groped, or worse, don't expect help from anyone -- even if it's happening in a crowded subway car!!! Those "tough" New Yorkers either act like nothing is happening or stare at the incident with wide-eyed fear
Working here can be hectic and competitive.
Driving is also a challenge -- motorists are aggressive and/or frequently uninsured (because of those affordable insurance rates), and the pedestrians have a habit of defiantly waltzing in front of cars, even when the driver has the green light.
If you plan to become a New Yorker, don't believe what you see in Friends or the Spiderman movies; it's not that fun living here.

Stay 1 week - see the museums, cruise the harbor, go up the SOL and then get the hell out, its unlivable except by the natives who know nothing else.

| The Truth About NYC - 10/2/2005
I moved to NYC 14 yrs ago and here is the truth about living here: I have had one foot out the door almost the whole time and most people I know do too. That is because it is legendarily expensive and difficult to live here. The quality of living is understood to be bad, unless you have a trust fund or a huge income and can afford a "nice" apt. Also, the pace is frenetic; it can alternately be energizing or draining. Also, I found that it takes a long time to work your way into the city socially. NYers are great people, but not terribly open. And for a straight, single woman it can be disastrous: this is not a good city for relationships, but rather a city for achievement, cultural experiences and making money. Having said all that, it is a remarkable place. Just walking the streets is entertaining and often inspiring. There is so much going on on any given day, that you can get overwhelmed. For me it has been like going to Graduate School of the World, it has changed me and influenced me beyond any of my expectations. If you can handle a tough living environment, and are not overly sensitive to noise and crowds, it is the experience of a lifetime, and everyone should do it.
