| Stay away from NYC at all costs!! - 5/5/2010
I was born here and came back to live in the city during my mid-twenties and am ready to move out of this place! I know everyone from outside of the U.S. or the East Coast region is crazy about New York but if you live here long enough, you will realize how the quality of life is so low in comparison to many other places. Over the years, public transportation has diminished in quality with out of control construction projects and subway line interruptions that delay your travel plans. If you live in another borough and wish to travel into Manhattan, it will take you more than an hour to get from Point A to Point B and with weekend projects, you will have to switch several times and walk up several long flights of stairs in the subway stations. Second, the city is filthy as ever with rats and roaches crawling all over the place during the warm months and the sidewalks smell so bad since all buildings leave their garbage on the street (why hasn't the city ever thought of a new idea on how to collect trash?). Third, there are long lines for EVERYTHING....such as concerts, Broadway shows, supermarkets, lunch/brunch places, movie theaters, etc. Every concert and new movie sells out in seconds and you always have to compete to get a single ticket. To add to this complaint, there are just too many people living here. The reason why everything is expensive is because of high demand and not enough supply, like for instance, the housing situation. Fourth, New Yorkers can be rude as ever. There are many yuppies who are overly pretentious and reproduce like crazy, too many Wall Street corporate guys with their fake personalities roaming around the city, and ghetto trash who inundate the subways, movie theaters, and department stores. The neighborhoods in the boroughs are quite segregated and the concept of a neighborhood in Manhattan no longer exists. Fifth, the city is too noisy. Construction will wake you up at unreasonable hours of the day or night, the subway will cause you to eventually go deaf, neighbors are inconsiderate, and people honk their horns as if speaking a foreign language. Sixth, as seen in other comments posted on this site, the city is overpriced. It is really a tough place to save money especially when you are young. I am now 30, have a decent job, and am considering living outside of the city to start saving some moola and hope to eventually move to another city. Thank you for reading my criticisms of NYC ;)

| Outstanding Social Services - 4/25/2010
New York City is a great city if you need affordable health care and social services. Check out family health plus, child health plus, healthy new york, nyc low income housing lotteries, HEAP, extended unemploymnet benefits. The economy has been tough especially for mature people, but the unemployment assistance and healthy NY program have kept us afloat.

| VERY EXPENSIVE AND NOT GOOD FOR RAISING CHILDREN.. - 3/13/2010
New York City is VERY expensive and hard to live in unless you are VERY wealthy. There is basically no room for middle class here. There is nothing for children to do (activities, sports, etc.) unless you are very wealthy.

| i love NY - 2/21/2010
I love it and plan on moving there within the next 2 years. I enjoy the cultural diversity, recreation, career and educational opportunities, and the strong and driven mindsets of the people! I have visited 4 times and I cannot get over it. It is said to be one of the easiest places to "climb the ladder" of success. NY has too much to offer, with hard work and dedication, you will reap many great rewards from the big apple!

| About Ridgewood... - 2/16/2010
The area is changing. When we first moved here 10-15 years ago from brooklyn, it was to get away from the gang problems and violence that we saw in our old neighborhood. Unfortunately, things like these seem to be happening more and more often in this neighborhood as well as time goes on...

| NY state of mind - 1/9/2010
I may be in a "NY state of mind" but I am wishing & seriously thinking of moving back to NY. For one thing, it is "home" & I have family & friends there. For another, or maybe it's partly the same, I still think that even with bad times, it still has it all over other places, as far as mindset, economy, jobs, etc. I moved from NY in the early 90s, when they were also experiencing tough times & I really thought the end was near for NYC. Not so, & I have to say I'm glad about that. It rebounded big time. I just don't see the same vibe wherever else I've lived(& definitly not where I've worked).

| Too Sterilizied - 1/7/2010
In the past 10 years NYC has lost a lot of it's character due to overdevelopment. In an effort to "clean things up" certain areas like the East Village and Lower East Village are being polluted with high priced housing destroying the artistic nature that made them special.

| living in Brooklyn - 1/3/2010
Brooklyn is a large borough of southern n.y....it has everything and each area of Brooklyn has a rich and different history. We moved here from Manhattan 10 years ago and love it....shopping, night life, theater, fabulous restaurants. Some areas are safer than others, but that improves every year. It has become a terrific real estate investment with above averge public schools and a general feeling of community.

| I Love NY - 12/16/2009
My mother lives in Ridgwood Queens, close enough to the L train for her to be able to make it into the city is minutes, but far enough from the craziness of city life to be able to sit back, relax and enjoy life's smaller pleasures. I grew up in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, along with mom, dad and my two biological and two adopted brothers. Growing up I thought Williamsburg was the entire world, and all those that lived outside of it would seem like total alliens to me. When my aunt moved to Ridgewood Queens in 1984, I was sure that I would never see her again. This was not so. Actually, I ended up loving the neighborly attitude of the people from this tight knit community so much that when my mother finally decided to move, I did everything in my power to put her in Ridgewood.
Once I saw that there were other neighborhoods other than Williamsburg in this great city of ours, I decided to venture out, explore, and fall in love with my entire city, one block at a time. I was 12 years old then. I am 37 years old now and I have fallen in love with neighborhoods in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and I am now starting to venture into the Bronx. There just isn't enough time in a life time for a person to experience EVERYTHING there is to see in NYC, but I am surely willing to try.
I love New York, with it's mix of people from all walks of life, and it's rich and unique New York culture (the real melting pot). I love NY because of the fact that I can go out and get Chinese, Italian, French, Sushi, a Deli sandwich, Curry, Dominican, Puertorican, South American, Polish, Russian, Indian, Arab, Mediterranean, fast food and fine quizine just minutes from my front door. I love NY because I can walk to a park and pick up a game of basketball, baseball, football, handball or slow it down with a game of Domino, Chess or Poker. I love NY because I can eat a 99 cent hot dog from Gray's Papaya while conversating with a multi-millionnaire. There truly is no other place like NY. I love NY so much that I've gone into the Real Estate Business just so that I can see it all first hand.
So, whether you are a New Yorker or a visitor, take some time to discover all that is our great city. I am a Licensed Real Estate Salesperson who is very familiar with the New York rental market. I am currently the Office Listing Manager at Big Deal Realty Inc., and we are looking for any and all listings in the Williamsburg, East Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Bushwick, Dumbo, Fort Greene, Cobble Hill, Clinton Hill, Prospect Heights, Bed-Stuy and East New York areas of Brooklyn, and Ridgewood, Middle Village, Maspeth and Glendale areas of Queens, and Mid to Lower areas of Manhattan. Both the Broker and I were raised in Williamsburg, with family scattered about in all surrounding areas of Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan, therefore we believe we are by far the best branch-out agents to help local owners reach full capacity in their buildings. I myself am 37 years old (not a freshman in the business) and I’ve been a New Yorker my entire life. If you need any help renting out apartments, commercial spaces, lofts, mixed-use spaces, etc., please feel free to call me or email me.
We also have an excellent Sales Department at our office so if you are looking to purchase or sell any properties in the areas mentioned above, please call or email me as well.

| Expensive as hell, but worth it if you've got the - 10/21/2009
I've been living in NYC most of my life. I went to college and came back here. What a mistake! Not that it's not a good place... it's just that it's not a good place to start a life, I think. I think being able to save a little bit of money early on is important so that you can do things with your money to create comfort around yourself... I like to invest. Anyway, the ratio of income to cost of living here typically sucks. It's hard to save money here. I came back because my family and friends are here. Little did I know that I would have been much better off moving elsewhere. I'm now looking at going west... after 5 years of trying a bunch of trying to do it right here in NYC. With student loan debt and a desire to save, well, you've really got to be incredibly motivated to live comfortably here. While I'm motivated, I don't feel like making my job my whole life. Plus... it's really hard to find a few minutes alone here by a lake or something like that.
On the other hand, this really is the greatest place to live. The culture and activities that are available to someone here are second-to-none. I've traveled through Europe, Asia, and parts of South America. The only cities that I've found that compare with the night life are London, Tokyo, and Seoul... also very expensive cities. In terms of culture, well, we're talking some of the same cities. There's always something new to discover here. I've lived here over 20 years and the surprises keep on coming... some good, some bad... but it's all worth it, I think.
A young person looking to move out here should really look at living in the outer-boroughs, speaking as a former real estate agent here. Unless, of course, you're like a buddy of mine who graduated in the top 10% of an ivy league law firm and has a six-figure salary waiting for him right out of college, look at the outer-boroughs.
I'm not sure what else to say about NYC... it's home... I love it... but the city loves no one... it loves money. In NYC one can only find "home" in small nooks and crannies around the city. For me it's an isolated spot along the Hudson River in the norther part of Manhattan.

The cost of living is very high and the space you can afford to live in here is substantially less than anywhere in the country.
