The cost of living isn't too high here if you check out the local markets which aren't too far off. Also it seems lots of new commercial places are opening up in the area , small businesses and whatnot, so it helps.

My city - 4/11/2009

I live in Jamaica, NY. It's a mixed neighborhood and I see people from all over the world every day. Shopping is great and the stuff that you have access to is as diverse as the residents in the area. I love the convenience of the subway and bus services. In the part where I live, a car isn't necessary. It's great to have one but not necessary. Late at the night, one can find an open store if one needs to buy something. The diversity of the people and the variety of activities that are all around fill the place with energy. It might not be Zen but it sure drives one to know and develop an awarness of it.

A Great Place to Visit But... - 4/3/2009

I've lived in New York since 1978, with the exception of brief periods of time that I've lived overseas. To anyone considering living in Manhattan or the NY metro area I would like to offer the following cautions: 1. Expensive. Everything is expensive. If you make less than $150,000 you will feel poor all the time. 2. Crowded. Shakespeare in the Park? Keven Kline? Nice idea? Try getting on line for your "free tickets" at 7am waiting for the ticket booth to open at 12pm. Bring a lawn chair and a few good books. You're going to need them. 3. Schools. Public schools vary widely in quality from horrible to world class. I've had 4 kids go through the system. It's a nightmare. Prepare to spend more time with your third grader than you spent in 3rd grade going through it yourself. 5th grade? Do your research! The 6th grade middle school rush makes your own experience getting into college look like a walk in the park. 4. Climate. It sucks. No two ways about it. NYC has a hot and sticky summer and a long endless winter. 5. Sports. NYC can be an awesome running town if you live by Central Park. It is a very good bike town, but not for kids. It sucks for everything else. Skiing? No. I call it sitting in traffic followed by icy granular fake snow. Going to the beach? Prepare to wait in traffic for hours, followed by a long hot walk with all your stuff to "the beach." Do not bring anything sharper than plastic butter knives or you will surely try to cut your wrists as you are slowly eaten alive by horse flies while you try to read a book in blinding sunlight with a gale force wind with enough sand and salt water to make your sunglasses useless in about 20 minutes. 6. Dating. Aha. The honeypot. NYC is probably the best place in the world to be single. The diversity of passionate, intelligent and good looking people is just amazing. Check out match dot com for NYC versus any other city in the country. Score 1 point for NYC. 7. Culture, Food, Music. World class, yeah, yeah, yeah, so what? If you're twenty something with money to spend, hakuna matata. If you have kids just remember that there are so many people crowded into the Museum of Natural History on any given day that it takes 100% of the fun out of going there. Summary: A great place to visit, but I'm ready to move on. Been here way too long.

Neighborhoods - 3/25/2009

A little known gem in New York City Midtown, is Beekman Place. It is rich in pre-war architecture;with buildings designed by Emory Roth and Rosario Candela. Historic Townhouses border the tree lined streets. Each December the Beekman Place Association erects a Christmas tree; which is placed in front of the Irving Berlin townhouse, where carols are sung and the tree lighted. There is a vest pocket park facing the East River, with a dog park. The area is rich in the history of New York City. It still is a neighborhood within a city.

NYC property taxes - 2/18/2009

The recent 7.5% property tax hike for NYC residents is appalling and Mayor Bloomberg should be ashamed to implement such a hike in the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. As if it weren't enough for middle income residents to be outpriced from living in Manhattan, now he is outpricing the upper middle class as well. When so many tri-state area residents are dependent on NYC for their jobs and incomes, why put the burden strictly on the few homeowners who live in the city and not tariff the millions and millions of people who commute into the city every day?

NYC Culture is # 1 - 2/9/2009

As far as I can tell, there is no city that rivals New York in terms of cultural pursuits. This extends to many areas - food, art, music, museums, theater. There are both high end and budgeted minded options, and this city has something to satisfy people of any interest. I am actually planning to leave NYC soon after 10 years of living here, but I know a place within easy access to the city is a must for me!

Access to world-class culture and arts - 1/30/2009

A magnate for the creatives classes, NYC attracts world-class arts and culture shows throughout the spectrum, a great stimulus for the community of artists that come to and reside in the city.

You list information for the Bronx with the following: COUNTY: BRONX (correct) CITY: BRONX (incorrect) The Bronx is a county within the city of New York. There is no city of the Bronx. It is a borough and a county but not a city. The Bronx is one part of New York City.

NYCs Diminishing Neighborhoods... - 12/11/2008

NYC is an amazing city to live in and/or experience as it is very diverse in respect to unique cultures, however, it has all changed since...NYCs unique, authentic and hitorical neighborhoods are no longer what they used to be. I'm not just talking about how the clean-up of crime, new businesses and high-end proprerty, etc. improved them. Many neighborhoods that were once "fun" to visit have become either yuppified, condo-licious or so touristy that's it's literally impossible to enjoy or call home. A lot of areas are so commercially saturated rather than residential and lacks that memorable charm...Long story short, do your research and visit various areas before picking a place to live. Don't base your decision off of how cool an area is from what you've heard if you do not really know.

Cost of Living - 9/27/2008

Anywhere you live in the NYC area the cost of living and especially the cost of housing is very high. A small city apartment can cost as much as a house in other parts of the country. Food costs are also high-a new store just opened downtown Brooklyn and a yogurt is $11.00! That's because the rent is so high.

Living in Brooklyn - 9/3/2008

Nice, everything is easily accessable. It is easy to overlook this as a benefit of living here. Transportation into Manhattan is efficient via subway, bus, car (if absolutely necessary - expensive). The downside is that everything is so overly expensive.Housing costs have run away from ordinary salaries of working people. The city attracts lots of young people, but I don't see how they can afford to stay, much less raise families. The atmosphere is very competitive.
