Southern Oregon - 10/25/2008

Great place to live the winters are cold and foggy. Summers can get very hot. Population is very conservative at about a 2 to 1 ratio. Other then that it is as good a place as any.

There is no place like home - 10/23/2008

I have, over the years, been in almost all 50 states. Every time I come home I am in awe of what a beautiful place I live. Because of the cost of living it's hard to get started here but where ever you live in the state you are relatively close to anything you can think of, mountains, ocean, desert, small town lifestyle and the culture of a cutting edge city.

Forest Grove, OR - 7/18/2008

I've been in Oregon for 34 years, and I love the area. It's green and beautiful. I can't think of anyplace I really want to live. The downside to all of this is the high cost of living here coupled with the low wages anyone is willing to pay. My husband lost his $20/hr job 3 years ago and now makes $11/hr. Rents and housing are high, as is gas, food and everything else. We'd like to stay but are feeling priced-out. Because I'm on SSDI, we at least have a tiny monthly income and because he's a security guard could probably transfer someplace else within his company or find something in another. I hate to feel this way, but we're in our mid-50's and need to find someplace less exensive to live.

I love Oregon! - 5/1/2008

I'm a born and raised Oregonian, haven't lived anywhere else, and I love it here. I was born in Portland and raised in Salem, with family up in Redmond and Bend. I think this place is beautiful, and there's a lot of diversity and freedom of living here. In portland, you can walk down the street and see two men holding hands and people walk by them and smile and are kind to them. You can be a pagan and be treated respectfully. You can just be yourself here and there's so many good things about this place.

Breaks in the Rain - 2/28/2008

Yes, there is a lot of rain and drizzle in Oregon, but we have the most spectacular sunny days in between. There are places, Eastern Oregon, the Medford area, that have more sunshine and less rain. We have lush forests, beautiful desert, gorgeous beaches -- mountains, desert, forests -- because of our great climate.

Portland, OR : only for the tough and the wealthy - 2/2/2008

I used to love coming up to Portland when I lived in Eugene, OR. There were great bookstores, friendly people, foreign film, more live music, all the things we didn't have. After living here for 10 months, I am not only leaving PDX, I'm moving out of state. The best: Powell's bookstore - right downtown, five floors, open 'till 11pm, they love for you to come and read. KBOO 90.7 FM - best communtiy radio station in the state. Excellent call-in shows on relevant topics like gentrification and racism, lots of jazz and world music, soul, really stellar listening if you want something new and different. Good natural food stores Friendly people- just don't expect to actually make friends The bad: The weather. Cold, damp and gray or white skies almost 9 months of the year. If you love to run outside, hike outside, see the sky and the sunset on a regular basis, this place is impossible. It's so white: Portland is the whitest city of it's size in the USZ. Only 7% African American, and 5% Latino (that may be too high). Portland is small, provincial, and although there are people who've traveled or come from other places, this is a place where you can feel very cut off from the rest of the world. Forget buying a used car here, unless you want to pay a high price for a poor or mediocre vehicle. Nobody follows Kelly Blue Book and it's like squeezing blood from a stone. Apartments are hard to find, unless you don't mind living 100's of blocks from downtown. People are friendly but closed and it's hard to make friends. This city can be deceiving becuase there are so many liberal, nice people. Just be prepared to be an island unto yourself. There are smokers EVERYWHERE - I almost need s gas mask to walk in Portland. Portland sounds a lot better on paper than it really is, so come and try it out before you buy a house here. State tax is ridiculously high and there are few social services. PSU is expensive and poor quality , like most of the universities in the state. But if you love it , despite all of this, than good for you!

Climate Diversity - 1/25/2008

Oregon's ranges from the deserts, to mountains, to lush Villamette Walley , to The beautiful coast line. Eastern Oregon had the most extreem weather, The Willamette Valley is modertate and we, we are not called moss backs for nothing. The moutains and valley boast a mirade of trees, flowers, and wild life. The ciastline ite beautiful, but the water and air are usually on the cood side.

The worst city in the US - 4/6/2007

I wrote my first post about Portland in October 2006, after living here for 2 months. I thought, "I'll give it some time and maybe things will get better". Well, I couldn't be more wrong and they've only gotten worse. The sooner we can secure jobs somewhere else, we're moving our family back to a more normal part of the country (anywhere OTHER than Portland). What's so bad about Portland you ask? Well, I say the best way to see that is to go see the real Portland. Get on the Max (Portland's great public transportation system, I might ad in all fairness) and take it through Portland. First, be prepared to deal with some of the weirdest characters you'll ever see. There are bumper stickers in Oregon that say, "Keep Portland Weird". Well, they have succeeded! If you're the "open minded" "liberal" type, you won't notice anything. If you're a conservative person of any political leaning, you will. Multiple piercings, bodies covered with tattoos, green and purple hair, body odor that will knock you over because the throngs of homeless teens that haven't taken a shower or brushed their nasty teeth in a week, etc. etc. Now that you've experienced that, get off at Pioneer Square. Enjoy the smells of unbathed losers playing hacky-sack and using the "F" word 8 times in an 11 word sentence. Then be prepared to get asked for "a quarter so I can ride the bus" or see them hold up signs, "being hungry isn't a crime". After you've experienced that for a bit, walk north on 5th or 6th (or south, it doesn't matter) and play "count the teenage homeless beggar". I used my cell phone camera today (4-7-07) so I could send pics to my brother because I wanted him to believe me. I got 9 points in 3 blocks! And for all this beauty, class and cosmopolitan lifestyle, you only have to pay $500,000 for a decent house (decent in that your neighbors aren't meth dealers). $500k in a decent neighborhood in Portland gets you a 2300 ft2 house, no basement and an 8 foot yard around your house. What a deal! In most places (not California or Seattle, of course, those are other dreadful places), you could buy that house with a full, finished basement on 5 acres! The sooner we can leave this city and state the better. Add the misery I mentioned above with the dreary weather, it makes you wonder who thought to start a city here in the first place. Again, I know people will read this and think I'm crazy. But that's because there are 2 kinds of people in Portland

Life in the Greater Portland Metropolitan area - 4/2/2007

Overall it's an okay place to live. I grew up here and see how overpopulated it has become. The city of Portland government is always crying about not having enough money for schools, yet they waste money on things that most people don't want or even need. I'm glad I don't live in the city. Very glad. I live here for the scenery and my family.

The good, the bad, and the ugly - 1/3/2007

Oregon has no sales tax, but property taxes are high, crime rate is terrible, and politics has turned Oregon into a far left state, which in turn has done much to hurt the economy of Oregon. Education administrative costs have become so high that it is harming the quality of children's education instead of helping it. Oregon is a beautiful state with many natural wonders, a place that at one time a person had the freedom to enjoy and go where they pleased and follow their dreams. It's place that I fell in love with 45 years ago. Now, sadly, so much has changed that the freedom we cherished is slowly being choked out of our lives.

Eugene and most of Oregon leans heavily to the lef - 7/30/2006

Oregon is a hard place to get things done. Besides a spiraling state debt, every issue is talked to death and I have seen federal dollars pulled for projects because government is trying to do what is politically correct for everyone. You can't please everyone. Do what is best for most and move on.
