Transportation - 6/26/2007

There is no functional mass transit available. The way roads are laid out, there are only a few major arteries that can carry traffic in and out of the city. This results in very congested rush hours - still less than major areas such as DC, Atlanta, etc.

Do Your Research Before You Move Here - 6/12/2007

I was born and raised in Seattle and moved to Raleigh 4 years ago. We were seeking a smaller town (not too small) and a more traditional way of life that embraced old-fashioned morals and values. We found most of that in the Raleigh area. What has been most disappointing about the area are two things. The attitude of the people that move here from big cities (NY, NJ, Philly, LA, Chicago, and others) wanting a more progressive city and pushing a liberal mentality onto others. I don’t understand why these people get frustrated after moving to a southern town where southerners do not think like them – what did they expect? Plus, what is wrong with saying “yes ma’am or no sir?” I find it to be good manners and a sign of respect. Raleigh is a southern city with southern values, however these “progressives” want to change the city to their way of thinking. These newcomers also make fun of the southerners. I have to say in defense of the southerners, Raleigh is their home and if you don’t like how they speak, how they drive, what they eat, or the fact that they have different morals and values than you, than please think about relocating to a different town because you’d be much happier somewhere else. I chose this city because of the existing way of life, I didn’t come here to change their way of life. If you are a “progressive thinker,” I think it would serve you well to do a little more research and seek a more progressive town than Raleigh. The second disappointment is the luring of illegal aliens. The city seems to want them to come here and welcomes them with open arms. There are pockets of illegals, not just Hispanics, popping up and crime rates have risen. In the short time I’ve lived here, crime has almost doubled. It’s unfortunate to see this happening, especially in the suburbs around Cary, Garner, and Fuquay-Varina, which used to be peaceful safe towns but no longer. The last items to consider are the job market and cost of living. The jobs are primarily medical, including biotech and pharmaceutical, high-tech, and agricultural research. There are also lots of jobs in the administrative field and service sector. What I have found is that there are two types of jobs here: the high paying, medical research/technical type jobs that pay around 60K+ and require 10-15 years experience, or there are the low paying administrative and service type jobs that pay 20K – 30K a year. There is not much in between (35K-55K). And the only

Reply to Kelly re: Raleigh - 6/4/2007

Most jobs in Raleigh are medical-related, high tech, pharmceutical, etc. I believe with solid billing experience you would not have a problem. Water is fine - city tests at my house often as part of their quality control & sends reports. I was just picked randomly. Our house is 1,850 sq ft & someone is home all the time, so AC or Heat, Lights always on. Gas/Elect together average $200 a month, water $35-40. Food is a bit more expensive than Atlanta where we visit Mom often. Also NC has higher gasoline tax, although not as high as some states, gasoline is higher than other southern states. State income tax is 7%, no local income tax. Property tax in Wake County about 10% of home value. Great schools, affordable housing. A lot of growth in the area, which will be a problem without better planning. No good public transportation (bus, train). Still, I love it. Safe, friendly. Great weather.

Looking in Raleigh - 6/4/2007

Wow, sorry to hear all the negative spin from the libbies of the North. I, too an looking to leave Michigan, but for the same reason. Too many libbies that complain. I want the traditional, conservative, values of a faith based community that I had growing up. I am looking for that in the South and am wondering how I would fit in in Raleigh. Are there many small towns with that small town charm left? Eager to leave.

Can someone help me? - 6/2/2007

I was wondering if someone could help me out. I would like to move, and Raleigh is one of the places I'd like to go. I was wondering how much an average family of four spends on electric, water, heat, phone, home owners ins, car ins, also taxes on homes themselves, and approx property taxes. Also, I am orig from ny and picky about my drinking water- is the tap water drinkable? I've also heard there are not may jobs avail- is this true or is that apply to only certin jobs? I work in an office, I do billing. I'd appriciate any help someone can give me.

It is not that cheap - 6/1/2007

We moved from Brooklyn, NY to Raleigh, NC and one would expect the cost of living to be considerably less. Not so. The only thing less expensive is the cost of a house.

Raleigh....Great area to live - 5/17/2007

I moved to Raleigh in 1985, when I was four years old and lived there for 20 years before moving to Tampa, FL about a year ago. I never really thought much of Raleigh while I was living there but now that I have left, I really realize and appreciate how great of an area it is to not only live but to raise a family. It is like a breath of fresh air, everything is newer, it's a growing area and there are lots of beltways and bypasses to ease the daily commute. I would highly reccommend Raleigh as a place to relocate and I plan on getting back there eventually.

What is the cost of living? - 3/28/2007

I live in Northeastern PA and my husband and I are considering moving to North Carolina. He will be transferring with his company, Verizon, he's a technician. We have 2 kids age 2 & 3. We're looking for a safe neighborhood. Close to schools, parks, etc. Not a busy city life. How are the schools here? I hear Cary schools are great but we would be a minority. We're not racist in anyway, just wouldn't want to be a minority. I could use all the advise I can get. We're planning on a visit sometime soon.

I don't know whether to post about the lack of car - 2/4/2007

I have lived in a fairly nice apartment for about three years but I am now hearing gun shots near where I live and close-by at that. Raleigh is a beautiful city and near the beaches but if you need a good job, and want to feel safer, this is not the place to be. Cary is a better choice if you want something close to Raleigh and the RTP area, etc. I am actually in the process of trying to relocate to the DC Metro Area because of career opportunities and will also be researching a good, safe city close by.

Ahh yes Raleigh ... Sux - 11/11/2006

Problems with this place ... Where are the street lights? When the sun goes down the streets disappear! Are they afraid that street lights will encourage clandestine nightly activities OR are they too cheap and lazy to make it happen? Driving around Raleigh - WTF??? Let me explain to you suthern folk ... the farthest right lane is the SLOW lane. Left lanes are PASSING lanes - get it?!? What's up with turn signals? No, I didn't take drivers education here but don't they teach you to use your turn signals when changing lanes ... or did you forget how to operate that? Last but no least ... do a Google search on 'KKK' meetings in Raleigh - RALEIGH!!! Not some po'dunk - back woods - boondocks location AND you'll find that there was one this year (2006) Ahh Yes - U Gotta love NC -- (for the slow sutherners' that was sarcasm) Oomla
