I have lived in Scottsdale, AZ for over 38 years - 6/11/2009

The weather is wonderful 9 months out of the year. July, August & September can be very hot. However, you receive over 300+ days a year of sunshine. I would highly recommend this region of Arizona.

Scottsdale is a very clean, safe, expanding city. However, the school system should be much better and the cost of living is high.

Locked in when the rest of the world is having fun - 7/15/2008

Unless you have scales, you can only be outside in water from May-October else we are baking. Every city had a "lock in season" but being locked in while other cities are enjoying life is different. We get out when others are doing holidays and baking in the house. Guess each person has to choose which is for them. The plus is we do not have to shovel snow to get to the pool or work.

POLITICS - 6/19/2008

Very conservative.Too right wing and not at all thoughtful. I want to be with people who think and take the time to really consider the issues and their impact on the greater good. i have found very little of that here.

Snobsdale, anyone? - 6/16/2008

Okay, sure, there are a lot of people with money here. They flaunt it or snub those who are seemingly without it. So, get over it. If you're confident in who you are, should this bother you? And while I couldn't afford to live here, working here is awesome. I live north of here in Phoenix. I must say, leaving some of the dirtier parts of the city to work in the clean and pristine Scottsdale location is a nice respite. The city has great shopping and eateries, too. And actually, I've never been snubbed by anyone who lives here. I think it's the perception that one might have because they aren't wearing Manolo Blaniks or carrying a Kate Spade original (people watching is fun). NY, LA...those places, too, have their rich, but parts of those cities are extremely fun to visit, and so is Scottsdale, even if it's visiting from your home only 5 miles away. As for the heat, however, it sucks. The entire southwest is just damn hot! There is nothing to do in the summer here (same as Tucson, Phoenix, or any hot place) if you don't have a pool or at least access to one. So, if heat isn't your thing, I'd say that's the only reason to stay away from Scottsdale, Snobsdale, Snotsdale or whatever you want to call it.

Scottsdale is overrated - 10/17/2007

Scottsdale is not that great! It's getting very exspensive and people here act like they live in LA, and it's nothing like it. There is nothing to do here, but go shopping in one of our many chain stores. If you like the outdoors you can do stuff in the winter. In the summer it is way to hot to even go out of your house. The people here are very rude and act like they are millionaires, but most people I have met live on credit. Traffic is getting worse and worse everyday. If you want diversity and culture Scottsdale is not for you. There are some good things about Scottsdale. The weather is very nice 6 months out of the year. Taxes are low, but that's going to change soon because property tax is ketching up with housing boom. Third there is alot of jobs.

Scottsdale has the best overall quality of life of any city I've ever lived in. The climate is lovely year-found, the desert is beautiful, and the city has every possible amenity.

I love living here. You can't beat the weather...well except for the summer time when it is over 110 for over 40 days!! Then it is only between 100 and 110!! KILLER! Once you make it through the summer......LIFE IS WONDERFUL!!!! Lots to do here. Great schools, great shopping. Only one problem....you need to be a millionaire to live here! VERY EXPENSIVE!!!

If you don't have to interact with anyone, don't mind what influences your kids are exposed to, not a bad place to live. Drive to a local jr high school and see how the kids dress and act. Ask your daughters what a "rainbow" is. Truly out-of-control in every way. Highest divorce rate in the US=Maricopa county: over 70%.

Arrogant people with no reason to be so - 7/23/2007

People in Scottsdale seem to think they are sitting in the richest, most elite community on planet earth. Yet many of them are simple white trash, like the "lady" that cut me off on an Easter Sunday and then proceeded to flip me off from inside her black Mercedes while wearing formal wear. Besides that, it's miserable weather from May to October.

Beautiful... but not perfect. My critique: - 7/7/2007

I am semi retired, living in Scottsdale for the last 7 years. Like many who moved here, I wanted to escape the harsh winters of the Northest. Scottsdale is a dichotomy - South Scottsdale, the older part, where I would be considered wealthy. I live in North Scottsdale, where I am a middle class citizen, at best. The good: Everything's new! Mostly friendly midwestern people. Growing high and low tech jobs... help wanted signs everwhere. Lots of restaurants. Tons of shopping. Convenient, abundant medical, including the Mayo. Low crime (North Scottsdale). Pristine environment. Beautiful neighborhoods (no bad ones). Lots of masterplanned communites. Nice looking schools. My sense says this would be a good place to raise a family. Highest open space per person of any city over 200,000. 8 months of great weather. Mecca for golfers, bikers and hikers. It averages 5-6 degrees cooler than Phoenix. Phoenix airport 30 minutes away (non rush hours). Much cooler northern Arizona mountains are 2 hours drive for summer weekend getaways, snow skiing in the winter. The bad: Everything's new! Typical sun belt melting pot city. No sense of community. Not culturally diverse. Monotonous restaurant menus... steak houses and Mexican food. Scarcity of stimulating conversation. Too much revolving around golf... tiring. Great looking schools but low paid teachers. Land and housing have become expensive... not a problem for all the retired rich and newbie rich moving here in droves, wearing it all on their sleeves (or breasts if they're females). Bently's outnumber VWs. A "park" here is a mountain with a hiking trail. The area lacks family oriented parks with lots of shade, grass, ponds, picnic and play areas. June, July and August are too hot for outdoor activity. Traditional parks would make it more tolerable to be outside in the summer. I hope my critique is helpful to you. Please keep in mind my opinions are based on my stage in life, where I grew up and where I've lived. Annecdotally, I have always loved the "water"... until I lived on an island for 6 years. I don't care if I ever see an ocean again! A 7/07/2007

I grew up here - not what it used to be...... - 7/5/2007

Sadly I have to say the city has changed since the 70's... Having grown up here and went through all years of school including college and grad school, I really know the area. I now have a family of my own and live in the same town as my extended family. This city has changed so much since the 70's I just dont believe this place is good to raise a family anymore. I dont want to leave my extended family, but the kids are being influenced all the wrong ways. Money is SOOO important. There are so many divorces here and people trying to put on a show. If you live in a nice neighborhood, you cannot drive a mini van without getting stares. Also when I drop off my kids at school, I need to dress up (high heels, maybe a tight shirt, etc). Those that dress down or drive "not the best of show" cars are in a different category. Its out of control. I can say this place is beautiful. The summers are bad but if you have a pool and are willing to pay $300/mo to keep your home cool June, July, Aug, Sept then the weather is not bad. I find that it gets tiring to see sun EVERYDAY!!! Even growing up here I would like to have an overcast day or two. I am a female and try my hardest to stay away from the pretentiousness but it is ALL around with the women especially. Very hard to be normal because your seen as a hick if you dont have flashing white (newly ZOOMED) teeth or the perkie large boobs. In fact, even the non-pretentious looking type have the boob jobs here. Many high schoolers are now getting them, crazy!!! Also the sun is so extreme. I put on 40 SPF every day but see that I have more smile lines than those moving here from some other states. TOO much sun! It makes you wonder are they doing botox shots too, like everyone else. A friend who recently moved here told me that women elsewhere just want to dress to look pretty but the women here what to look sexy. Very true! I see this in church too. Clevage and short skirts with heels at church no wonder there is so much divorce.
