| Depends - 3/6/2010
Toledo isn't really that bad of a place, but like most cities of its size you need to be selective about where you live. We live in the suburb of nearby Sylvania and quality of life there is excellent. The downtown area, unfortunately, has not fared as well as similar cities like Cincinnati and the inner city public schools do face some major challenges. Overall cost of living is much better than it is in nearby Michigan.

| The cheapest place I've Lived, with lots to offer - 1/2/2010
I have lived in Denver, CO, Columbus, OH, and Salt Lake City, UT and Toledo is the most affordable places I have lived. There is a lot to do in Toledo, with a newly built Minor league hockey and football Arena added near a recently built minor league baseball stadium downtown. The Toledo Zoo is also close by and there is development of new entertainment areas such as Fallen Timbers and Levis Commons all the time. The weather is cold and windy, and the movies are 10 bucks but if you can get past that Toledo is great!

| Toledo's not that bad, but it could be better. - 6/6/2008
I have lived in Toledo my whole life and am seeking to leave. The cost of living is decent, we have Wal-mart, Target, Meijer's, The Andersons, and other major chain stores, fast food restaurants are always just around the corner, and if you don't drive we have a fairly reliable public transportation system and we do have an airport, Greyhound station, and an Amtrak station. Toledo has a fair mixture of races and ethnicities so relations are better than other places. Toledo has its fair share of crime but we're nowhere nearly as bad as Los Angeles, New York City, or Detroit. Some areas in Toledo are decent and others you should stay away from at night, it's that simple. We have several libraries, fine restaurants, and a great zoo. The Maumee River runs through Toledo and it is filthy and it stinks because of all of the toxic wastes dumped into it. Our mayor is incompetant and has proven his dislike for our military recently by banning the marines from training in our downtown area. The job market is good providing you're okay with minimum to low wages. Our city government also wastes tax dollars on pointless projects.

| Quit Complaining and Start Acting - 6/4/2008
I have lived in Toledo for just about a year. All I hear is..."the Mayor is a jerk" and other negative comments about Toledo. Citizens have the opprotunity to do something about their community, but sadly most find it easier to bitch or find someone to blame for their problems. The Mayor didn't fill out an application to get his job...people chose him, and this isn't his first term either. People complain about their community also, but are quick to shoot down any levy or tax increase. Get involved with your community, MAKE it a better place. Don't complain about city workers working overtime, be thankful there is a group of people that ensure you have clean water, trash-free neighborhoods, and a safe environment. If there is a dangerous release of chemicals in your neighborhood, you will quickly change your mind about city workers when they come to your aid during off hours. Would you prefer to just let a hazardous situation remain as it is until the next business day? If you don't like Toledo then why not move? Try living in Michigan, you will see that Toledo isn't as horrible as everyone says.

| Don't bother moving here - 5/25/2008
There is a reason it's so cheap to live here. The crime is high, it's dirty, it's blue collar and the people are rather dumb. They are very proud of themselves......not sure why.

Toledo.. Toledo is a very unappealing looking city. Toledo has a high crime
rate with high unemployment. The job market in Toledo is awful. Toledo does
have one of the top zoos in the U.S.

| Very bad place to live - 9/5/2007
Do you want to live in a place where the streets are always under construction or thirtyfive percent of the population is ether on welfare or some sort of state or government assistance . Then let me tell you Toledo is the place for you . Yes you could buy a home in the luxurious north end for less then ten thousand dollars , But just remember your neighbor could sell you some drugs or his girlfriend my want to you know what for money, Or why buy in Toledo if your a city offical , cop , or teacher you could put the tax money back into another town such as Perrysburg or Maumee . Or you could get a job for the city and not even be qualified for it just be a minoriy and its yours . This town has been on the buddy system for decades don't let anyone fool you . I have been here 33 years and dont know why

| Stagnant Economy - 7/18/2007
Although I have a decent job here, there is little opportunity for advancement and the economy is going nowhere. We have a mayor who has proven time and time again he doesn't know how to do his job and/or doesn't care about his citizens. That's why I am looking to move somewhere else with better opportunites for my family. The city officials are constantly complaining of "brain drain" but with the way things are here - why would anybody want to stay when they can be offered so much more elsewhere?

| I only have 9 months left... - 6/6/2007
I moved here about a year and a half ago, and now I'm leaving. Toledo is no place to come if you are trying to advance your career, or if you have any cultural pursuits. The only real plus about living here is that you are close to other, more interesting cities. Toledo is also good if you have a family, as the suburbs are very nice. If you are considering moving here, then use caution. Jobs are scarce, so you wanna land one before you come. If you are an extrovert, be careful...as Toledoans are cliquey and quite rude. Finally, if you have children, make sure you send them to suburban schools, as the public school system in the city proper is kind of messed up right now. Oh, and nightlife...forget about it.

| Not the Glass City the Black Hole - 3/15/2007
I've lived in Toledo for a few years now but only because my Mother and My Step-Father are here. This town they call the Glass City is a "BIG BLACK DORMANT HOLE!!!" Its run down it has one of the highest Black population AIDS rates in the state of Ohio and there is NO WORK. And just like one of the other people wrote about the people in this town, They are rude, beligerant, and very unsocial. I've lived in Tennessee, and Los Angeles the people are pretty self explanitory in Tennessee just down home fun loving people that want to make you feel welcome. Los Angeles it isn't hard at all to make new aquatances and even life long friends. All and All I have to say don't ever move to this town it's a Black Hole and you'll never get out alive.

| Gloom and Doom - 1/26/2007
My fiance and I moved here about 5 months ago and I couldn't hate it more. This has got to be one of the most depressing places in the U.S. People are downright mean here not to mention rude! They also seem to have no sense of humor. I've honestly never felt so unwelcome by a community. It is overcast here pretty much every day which seems to suggest that the sun doesn't even want to visit. Maybe I'm just being naive. I'm from Texas and people there act as if they've known you your whole life. It's hard to meet someone who is not friendly where I'm from. I've said that to people here and they assume that I must be from some hole in the wall town. However, I've been all over Texas in many cities much bigger than Toledo and everyone has always bent over backwards to make me feel comfortable and welcome. All in all I would say that Toledo, Ohio is a very gloom and doom place.

| Depressing - 12/27/2006
I've lived all over the country and this has to be one of the most depressing cities in the U.S. The Auto Industry and their Unions have a vice-like grip on progress in this area. People here are angry and mean. (Probably because they live here). There is nothing to do but go to a chain restaurant. The weather is horrible and the landscape is as flat and dull as the town's vibe.

| Great place if you are a nurse or a truck driver!! - 12/5/2006
Those are the only two professions that seem to be in demand, other than low-paying service jobs. Toledo really has some good qualities that you can enjoy if you can find a job! Cost of living is super affordable even in comparison to the nearby Detroit area. You can get a nice house here in the older yet well-maintained neighborhoods for under $100,000 and many for far less than that. Smaller homes can be had for $65,000. And since so many people are leaving the area because of the lousy job situation, you can have your pick of the litter! Apartments go for less than many car payments. Toledo is situated in easy proximity to many great attractions. Cedar Point is an hour drive, with Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame less than an hour beyond that. You can go to Ann Arbor for the cultural college town experience in an hour. There are many things to do in town too, provided that it is summertime. There are lots of festivals to keep you busy in summer, plus the Zoo is top notch as are the Metroparks and the Art Museum. Go to Put-in-Bay, for a slice of Margaritaville in less than an hour. Vacation Destinations abound if you are willing to drive three to five hours: Chicago, Mackinac Island, Niagara Falls, Toronto, Traverse City. Make a friend who has a cottage somewhere north in Michigan (many, many people have them)and get an invite for a nice weekend gettaway in the Irish Hills, or the Upper Peninsula. Winters are long and dreary. If you come from any of the southern states, you will surely miss your native climates. The climate is one extreme to the next, and unpredictable. 70 and sunny, Wednesday and 40, gloomy and rainy on Thursday. This is not an exhaggeration. Summers can be very hot and humid, with winters differing quite a lot from year to year. They are however guaranteed to be dark, dreary, cold and boring, as once winter hits there is really nothing to do here but go to bars and restaurants, which can get old after the fourth straight month.

| Little Detroit - 11/11/2006
I found it funny that even the residents praise toledo. No, not the worst city I've been in beyond a highly uneducated population, struggling economy, bland nightlife; its hard to imagine living here. The zoo is decent, and there are some notable fine art attractions. Ofcourse if you are a resident you would be more likely to defend your city even if you didn't notice the collapse around you. Another town in the dying rustbel of the midwest.

| hidden gem - 10/4/2006
I grew up in Toledo. Most Toledoens are very proud of their city. I am a big fan of the great metroparks system, the art museum, Mudhens (AAA baseball team), and the zoo. There are a number of great suburbs and neighborhoods. There are a decent amount of cultural outlets (symphony, museums, etc.) My family has found great restaurants and specialty stores that contribute to a great quality of life. There are numerous Catholic schools for kids. It is not a fabulous place for young, single, professionals (but few places are)...a great family town where neighbors are happy to get to know each other.

| Economy - 7/31/2006
born and raised in toledo, while I dont think it is a bad place to raise a family, I think it is a horrible place to plan your future. Economy is constantly struggling and the jobs seem harder to find than ever. Very blue collar, it seems the only good jobs are in one of the auto plants, good luck getting one. I question the logic of city management, last year they wanted to lay off about 70 police and fire workers due to budget restraints, yet our crosswalks in the downtown area which were perfectly fine were being replaced with a decorative brick to improve the look of the city ????
If you are considering a move to the area, secure a job beforehand and look for housing in the suburbs (sylvania, holland, perrysburg, monclova etc.)
