A GREAT PLACE TO BE - 7/12/2006

I was born and raised in Toledo and I loved every minute of it. I joined the Navy and was one of the few who could say I was actually from a city and not a subburb. Toledo has everything you could want in a place to live. Shopping, entertainment, restaurants, parks, zoos, art, culture, location, etc. For all of you who hate Toledo because it's Toledo, you need to stop complaining. Toledoans make Toledo what it is, good and bad, and if you want it to be better than STOP COMPLAINING AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. I now live in "paradise", also known as the Florida Keys, and I miss Toledo every day. I miss everything about it. Toledo will be great again, someday, with a little bit of effort. Have you Toledoans all forgotten that Toledo was one of the great cities back in the early part of the last century and there is still a lot to be proud about????? Cheer up and make Toledo the place it used to be!!!

Fair place to raise a family - 7/2/2006

I moved back to Toledo after living on the east coast, 16 years ago. It was great while my kids were growing up. My kids attended Catholic grade schools and mostly high schools. If you don't mind going out much, especially if you are a minority it's' quiet place. There is a black community but I am not a church going person so I have to find outlets in cities around Toledo like Detroit or Cleveland to see concerts or to find a diversity of people who are no narrow minded.

Job market aside its a great place to live - 6/30/2006

Aside from the job market Toledo is really an easy and affordable place to live. We've got great metroparks,a fantastic zoo and a world class museum with FREE admision. There are many cultural opportunities;The Peristyle, Toledo Opera,Toledo Museum(FREE!!)At least a dozen local theater companies and almost as many local choral and orchestral groups. There is a kids Science museum downtown(COSI) We have the University of Toledo, Medical University of Ohio and Bowling Green State U just 20 minutes away and we're less than an hour from Ann Arbor(really cool place),There is always something to do in Toledo.The people here are the most friendly,polite and easy going folks i've met anywhere. Rents are affordable, the housing is a little soft right now so it's a buyers market. Toledo is an oasis of diversity and tolerance in an otherwise increasingly conservative state. Now the down side...the job market here SUCKS!!!!! The unemployment here is the highest of any region in Ohio(7%).The only real job opportunities are for medical professionals, low wage retail or if you're lucky enough to be in the UAW and have a job at the new Jeep plant. Maybe you're lucky enough to get a job in Ann Arbor. (45 minute commute)The second drawback is Toledo Public Schools. They were doing better for a while but now are going back to the dogs. The surrounding suburbs have much better schools and part of Toledo is in Washington Local S.D.(very good). I've been here for 8 years after living in Va.,NC and NY(Long Island..TOXIC) and I am comfortable here but if the job market doesn't improve I'm going to have to look for greener pastures.

A dying city, a city in denial - 4/24/2006

Toledo has to be one of the most depressing places on Earth. Small pockets of nice neighborhoods are completely surrounded by run-down, dilapidated neighborhoods. Unemployment is high. the few jobs that are available are very low paying. The overall quality of life in Toledo is about as bad as it can get in the United States. The population is declining at an alarming rate. No one seems to want to live there. After having wasted half a century of my life in this dumpy little town, I am glad to finally be getting out.

Affordable if you can find a job! - 2/4/2006

Very affordable with good Midwestern quality of life--provided you can get a job! Pluses: excellent metroparks, access to nearby Lake Erie beaches, superb zoo and art museum, close to pretty scenery in Michigan and southern OH, reasonable rent and home sale prices. Minuses: Not sophisticated, not many jobs available, very overcast most of the time
