Winchester Virginia & Shenandoah Valley - 3/1/2008

As a full time resident since 1984 and a part time area resident (weekends) since 1956, I've watched the growth of this dynamic community up close. I've been a REALTOR in the Winchester area since 1987 focusing on residential, land and farms. Winchester is unique in that most of it's downtown has been preserved and renovated. Many of it's historic areas are much as they have been for the last 2 centuries. The area is gifted with many preserved historical sites associated with the Revolutionery War and the Civil War where many pivitol battles were fought to preserve the union. Winchester has been home to George Washington, Patsy Cline, Admiral Richard Byrd and Pultizer prize winning author Willa Cather. The area is at the cross roads of major highways which have contributed to its comercial and manufacturing growth since pre-colonial days. Feel free to contact me online for further info on the area via www.WinchesterVisitorsCenter.com.

Cities are not part of counties - 2/21/2008

Virginia, the Old Dominion, follows the old English distinction between cities and counties. A city in Virginia is not part of a county and a county has no jurisdiction over a city. This is unique in the United States. Under old English common law, a county was the area controlled by an Earl (English equivalent to a Count). A city was granted a Royal charter which placed it directly under the protection of the Crown with special privileges. A county police officer has no authority in a city and vice versa (except in the case of "hot" pursuit). A Virginia city is granted its charter by the General Assembly (the oldest democratic legislative body in the new world). Cities can petition the General Assembly to annex part of a neighboring county but not the opposite. To complicate matters, there are cities and counties with the same name that have no relationship with each other (the City of Richmond is about 50 miles from the County of Richmond). The final confusion is that because Virginia is over 400 years old, there are relics of old jurisdictions which no longer exists. There is a Charles City County but the actual City of Charles disappeared several centuries ago!

Culture - 8/2/2007

Recreation activities abound, but don't expect an ounce of open-mindedness in regards to culture from the majority of the state.

Although I've lived in Northern Virginia/eastern West Virginia all my life, the humidity and outdoor pollens are becoming intolerable.

Richmond Area - 8/21/2006

Winters are generally mild with temperatures averaging in the low 20 degrees and each snowfall about 2-10 inches. Spring and Winter strugle for power during the months of February and March and April finds the temperatures rising and the last frost of the year usually passing. Summer is fickle, weather flopping from the bearable 80+ degrees to the most unbearable 100+ degrees. However, the unbearable weather doesn't last very long and ends with a healthy rainstorm. Late August finds autumn in full swing and the beautiful colors of our local flora climax around the first week of October.

Quality living - 7/26/2006

Fairfax County and Northern Virginia is a short drive to mountains, seashore and Washington DC. An hour and a half to West Virginia,s state parks is a inexpensive way to commune with nature and swim in mountain water fed lakes.

fairly conservative and not much to do in the the - 7/9/2006

Virginia is a beautiful place to live with the mountains and the oceans within a days drive from most any place you may live. However, it is also a fairly conservative state with an over abundance of churches. And unless you live in N VA or the Hampton Roads area, you are going to be pressed to find much to do. Richmond is fairly active too but the rest of the state is pretty dead when it comes to social activities.
