I don't mind the rain too much here. It keeps the air clean and fresh, and when the skies clear, they are blue instead of the haze you get in many other places.

                               | Living In Washington State - 3/7/2009

I came to Washington State, with my parents, back in the 70's. I have watched this state change from a Open Space area to urban overgrowth. The cost of living has steadly raised year after year and the inflation factor is totally out of control right now. Unless you have a high tech job you aren't going to get ahead in Washington.
I love the greenery and the range of land, sea, water, and mountains that is reachable, within per hours of each other. I hate the way rules and regulations have taken over and the govern that's been in place for the last 10 years is ruining the greatest of Washington State.
Hopefully, it will not come to the same thing that happened in the 70/80's, where a billboard read "The Last Person Out, Please Turn Out the Lights".

                               | Relocating to Washington for Chicago in April - 10/3/2008

Getting discouraged, But I still want to move to Washington State?
I am a African American female with 4 kids (aging from 16 female, 11 female, 9 male, 7 female) and I have a husband. I have section 8 and ready to relocate to Washington from Chicago in April of 2009. What is making discourage is finding a nice area with good to excellent schools. I haven't been to Washington in about 17 years so I was not there long to enough to get to know the State. But my friend is there and she is suggesting that I live in nice area that she think is nice but being on different sites I am finding that it really not so nice. I don't want to relocate to put my kids in crappy school or to live in unsafe neighborhoods if that's the case I might as well stay in Illinois. But what cities are Black and white (that have mix race) friendly and not prejudice also with good paying jobs. Not mention safety for me and my children. My husband does have skills like grave digging and rehabbing houses and I am a C.N.A until I am done with school but we want a new start before I am done because it is hard out here in Illinois and I know I can stay and remain focus somewhere else. I have a friend that is there and she also mention that Washington have a lot of prejudice and shady folks.Basically in certain areas you can not have nice things because people would think you think you are all that and would try to take your stuff I want to stay away from those areas. But what areas to live in for families with section 8, African American, low crime rates. Also, because I am on section 8 that don't mean I want live in the dumps.

                               | High Cost of "Best Places" - 8/17/2008

Washington is a beautiful state. However, so are the other states in our Country. It is a shame that the marketing effort to sell Washington as one of the "best places" to live, has caused it to be a place where the average earner is having a very difficult time being able to afford to live... Housing costs are outlandish and do not reflect the best of the state.

Under the heading of Econony, your web site indicates that their is a 9% state income tax for Vancouver, WA. This is incorrect. The state of Washington does not have a State Income Tax. Is someone at your web site verifying "bestplaces" information before publishing?

                               | Kitsap Penninsula - 5/6/2008

The Kitsap penninsula is a different world from mainland Puget Sound. It is rural, quiet, not a lot of traffic.
True, we get 60 inches of rain a year and sometime have a little trouble getting Spring started.
And it can be a 25 mile round trip to a grocery store. There aren't many jobs either.
But the trees, the water, the clean air, and the quiet are heaven if you like that sort of thing.
And Silverdale has pretty much everything you could ever want in a city if you get bored.
I love it here.

Washington provides the opportunity to enjoy outdoor recreation like no other area. In our great outdoors, residents can access the ocean, sound, and a multitude of rivers and lakes for water sports; terrain from mountains to dessert for skiing, hiking and rock climbing or just to enjoy the beauty.

                               | Living in Sequim - 4/25/2008

I was raised first in Somerville and then Arlington, MA. Moved to Pelham, NH after marrying. Lived in San Diego almost 13 years before moving here to Sequim, WA (pronounced like squid but with an 'm' at the end).
Sequim is a gorgeous location and very unique in that it does not really rain quite enough here. It sits in the rainshadow of the Olympic Mts. However, the largest drawback is that although it never gets too cold in the winter months, it never gets warm enough during the summer months! We have lived here 5-1/2 years now and are missing heat. If it gets to 80 deg. everyone who has lived here a long time starts complaining but those of us who have had real summers want these days to linger.
Having friends over in the summertime? Better make sure you eat before 5 pm or the breezes will have your guests asking for blankets (and we live in-town, not by the water). There are times that the sun shines nicely enough but the wind will come up and spoil it.
It is awesomely beautiful here though.
The air quality is extremely good too.
But with the gas prices now almost to $4.00/gal. and few places to shop, an hour's drive to Silverdale to the Mall is expensive and Silverdale does not have all that much if you are used to city shopping like I was. We have lost Big Lots, so that only WalMart and a small version of JC Penny's is available plus a nice little downtown area that should be patronized more often.
Victoria, BC is not far but takes at least 2-1/2 hrs. by the time you park 18 miles away, take the ferry for the 90-min. ride and then walk to the downtown area. The shopping is awesome there! But our dollar is too weak now to make it worth the trip.
Seattle is 2 hours no matter what you do (even if you had a small plane because you'd have to get into the city after flying into an airport).
Food, gasoline and all goods in Sequim are higher than even the next towns of Port Angeles and Port Townsend. This is the price we pay for living in the so-called banana belt or more correctly, "The Blue Hole" (this is pretty accurate). Look up info about Sequim via Goggle searches.
But it is beautiful here . . . We have an awesome Saturday summer market with 80 vendors from fresh organic produce to crafted items and live professional music performances (Sequim Open Aire Market), and Jazz in the Alley (July 18 and 19, same days as the Lavender Festival). Jazz in the Alley has live jazz in the evenings in a walking downtown foot

If you think the politics in Fla. are crooked, Check out Washington! The last Govenors race was a joke! And now they have made it almost impossible to get an honest count with the Mail In Ballets. Last election was scarry, the amount of dead folks who voted.
Washington is a Great Place, Just the Politics are screwed!
