Fullerton: Good food, good music but bad roads. - 7/1/2019

I have been living and working in Fullerton for almost 20 years now and have seen it change through the years, both for the better and worse. Fullerton is a half college town and half professional services/business town. Fullerton is home to the oldest community college in the state and has a state university that is known for it's quality business school and champion baseball team. The city has a vibrant downtown area (DTF) that has been the focus of revitalization in recent years. With many bars/pubs and a wide variety of restaurants to choose from, Fullerton really does well in catering to the individual or group wishing to have a "night out on the town". Being the home of Leo Fender's original workshop, Fullerton has embraced music into it's heritage and often provides several opportunities for musical artists to share their talents. Many bars have live music on the weekend (especially the Slidebar by the train station) and the city even hosts a "Day of Music" where musicians and bands are welcome to set up on the sidewalk/or parking lot in front of popular city landmarks to perform for free. The food scene is very multicultural. Being in Southern California, there is a dominant Mexican food theme as in all SoCal cities, but there is so many other places to dine as well. There are many different choices for Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vegan, Thai, Vegetarian, Buffet, Traditional American, Mexican, and others. There's places trying to blend cultural foods together like Chinese South American fusion or Islamic Chinese restaurant. Some of the biggest downsides to Fullerton are the roads and traffic. The road quality is horrible. Every street is bumpy and has that slurry street sealing markings all over it. All other cities surrounding Fullerton are fine with their road quality, but once you hit the city limit: you're dodging cracks, pot holes, trash and more cracks. The traffic gets really bad during school pickup and drop-off times. The other big problem is homelessness. Yes there are many homeless and filthy people sleeping all over the place throughout the city. Recently, they haven't been too pushy for money but I usually don't interact with people in the city during day hours. Housing is very expensive and the city has allowed some multifamily condo/apartment developments to build but it's just too expensive. We're talking $350,000-$500,000 for a condo and houses starting around $600,000. Pretty much anything south of Commonwealth Ave is less desirable due to the smaller houses and lower incomes. I work 2 jobs (60 hours/week) and I am still just renting a room. I really don't know how people are affording any of these houses here. So there you have it. Fullerton, a great city for: school, entertainment, and food; a tough city for: housing affordability, being homeless, and driving your car.

Great Place to Vacation. - 3/29/2011

Fullerton has so much to offer, If you are interested in taking some vacation time here check out Vacation Rental by Owner /VRBO #164667 and other Fullerton home you can spend some time in. Fullerton offers quaint neighborhoods with Victorian architecture, 50 city parks, a museum, a cultural center, two libraries, two golf courses, a sports complex, a golf driving range, a tennis center, an arboretum, Janet Evans Swim Complex, two senior centers, two regional parks, an equestrian center, recreational trails, 10 to 15 minuted to Disneyland, 20 minutes to Knotts Berry Farm, 30 minutes to Newport Beach. A great place to relax or venture out to the never ending entertainment.

Fullerton, CA - 9/27/2009

Fullerton is a very nice place to live. Of course, it is located in beautiful Southern California. The weather is great year-round. Although Fullerton is located in a metropolis, Los Angeles/Orange County, if you are involved with in the community with kids activities and such, it doesn't seem like such a large place. Fullerton is BIG on education, with Cal State University-Fullerton, Western State University of Law, Southern California School of Optometry, Fullerton College, and Pacific University. Additionally, Troy High School has a world reknown tech program. Many of the public schools are magnet schools specializing in gifted programs, pre-med, technology, drama/the arts, etc. Additionally, many of the elementary schools are "blue ribbon" schools. Fullerton also has two museums: Fullerton Museum and Muchanthaler Cultural Center. There are all kinds of drama, arts, musical concerts, etc. that you can go to in our fair city. If you are an outdoor person, unbelievable as it may seem, even in this large city, you can find plenty of things to do. Cycling (as in bicyling) is popular here, with the many bike paths, both for street biking and mountain biking. Check out the Fullerton Loop, a gorgeous place to bike to get away from the city (although the Loop is all within the city, it just doesn't feel like it). Also, if you're into long distant biking, there's the river bed (dry river) path to the ocean. If you're into fishing, you can fish at Laguna Lake (on the Fullerton Loop) with the kids. How can anyone talk about Orange County without mentioning, the Anaheim Angels (NOT Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim), the Mighty Ducks, Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Huntington Beach, and all the other beautiful beaches along the Orange County coastline. If you like parks, there are plenty in Orange County, and some beautiful parks in Fullerton. Check out Craig Park, my favorite. Orange County tends to be a conservative county, so don't think "Hollywood" when you come here. Yes, there are rich people, but there are lots of regular people who are down-to-earth, hard-working people who believe you need to earn your keep. After writing about my fair city, I'm starting to wonder . . . why do I want to move?

What Fullerton is like... - 11/30/2008

Fullerton is a nice sized city with a ton of stuff nearby. Quiet neighborhoods, lots of shops and parks. I have lived in Fullerton for the past 5 years and I have never been robbed, bothered nor annoyed. People keep to themselves and for a city of this size, there are a lot of community activities. There are farmers markets, community classes and tons of different churches, a YMCA, a YWCA, a library, tons of groups, the Masons, Elks, and others. It's about as clean as any city in Southern California could expect to be. Disneyland is 15 minutes south, Los Angeles is 45 minutes North (with no traffic) and you also have Knotts Berry Farm nearby and multiple malls and beaches. It's a good city if you like urban/suburban living and are willing to pay a higher cost of living for it. If you like smaller towns and really friendly people, any city in Southern California is not for you. Fullerton is an extremely Republican city in a Democrat State. (i.e. California). Summers can be miserably hot, especially August, and there is no real change of seasons. So if you want to wear shorts almost year round, you'd love it here. : )

I have lived here all my life and it's great, but - 5/18/2007

I have a Master's degree and so does my husband. We both work and are still not able to afford a house here. Unfortunately we are looking to relocate. It is estimated that you must earn $214K a year to afford the median priced home here. If that is not a factor for you, Fullerton is great! Five colleges, seven theater companies, great culture. We don't like how Fullerton has become so over populated in the last 10 years, and we are burnt out of people who are moving in making the city more like Korea-town.

Downtown Fullerton is Great - 8/16/2006

Downtown Fullerton offers a beautiful place for daytime shopping, or a varied and ecltic night life. Try Roman Cucina for excellent Italian food, eye candy waiters (mostly male), dark ambiance and some of the best martinis in Orange County. Kettle and Keg is a great low-key place for hookah and dancing. Rockin Taco is always packed with Orange County's hottest people for lively dueling pianos. The city of Fullerton offers a "Taste of Fullerton" night once or twice a year wear they close a five-block strip of Harbor down and businesses open for an evening meet-and-greet. Fullerton is the only Orange County city I know of that feels more like a small town than a big city. It seems almost out of place compared to the surrounding area, but it's a good place to get lost in.

A $500,000 fixer upper - 8/16/2006

The cost of living in Orange County is really terrible, and it's getting worse as the populations in every city is growing. There are very few vacant lots left to develop (and many of those that currently are have future plans already made), so the demand is spurning an incredible increase in price. In 2004, My husband and I bought a three-bedroom 1950s "fixer upper" in Fullerton (1,258 sq ft) for $480,000.. One 350 sq ft room addition later, the home was recently appraised for $680,000. I find it amazing this rate of appreciation, but also frightening to think of where housing will be 5, 10, 20 years from now. I also am frightened to look at my $2,780 mortgage payment every month. If either my husband or I lose our jobs, we lose our home- more than 50% of our income goes into paying for house (versus the recommended 30% ). This is the situation of most people in Orange County- although most don't admit it.

Great place to live - 4/9/2006

I have lived in Fullerton for the past 3 years and I find it to be a great place with a nice climate. Even the winters aren't really all that bad. Most of the days are sunny here. Fullerton is a rather large city and the neighborhoods can range from extremely nice in the north end to somewhat run-down on the southern end, which are literally separated by railroad tracks. Still, it is possible to find nice houses on the "wrong side" of the tracks. The cost of housing here has gone out of control lately and has become unaffordable to most people. The downtown area is a lively, fun place with many nice restaurants and clubs for the single man/woman. It is the home of Cal State Fullerton College, so there are many college aged residents, which keeps the city hip.
