Poor Education - 10/15/2011

Irvington's school system does not offer a quality education. There are barely any resources for children and family's. This is not a good city to live in.

Public Education - 2/2/2011

I believe the public education system here in Irvington is not up to par. Some think it is okay, as long as you kid is enrolled in K thru 5. I chose not to gamble with my kids' education. So my 1st and 2nd graders go to private school. Also there is only 1 charter school. It is sort of new. I haven't heard anything spectacular about it. Property taxes are sky high....so why can't my kid get a good education for free?! People just don't care about kid's education in the urban area.

Irvington Really Stinks!! - 8/16/2010

I am so disappointed by living in Irvington, NJ. I moved here from NYC about three years now and it's been the biggest mistake of my life. The block that I live in has a girlie bar near by and it really disgust me to see these people come and go out of this "Booty Bar". The girls from that place would bring the "john's" in the back of my building to give the "service", if you know what I mean. I would call the police and no one would come to stop them. I can't wait until I move out of this block. I really thought it was a nice block to live in. Boy was I wrong. Never again. I'm very upset with my experience of living in NJ.

Irvington NJ Crime - 9/18/2009

I thoroughly agree. As a Newark ressident who borders Irvington and Pastors a church in Irvington, I've NEVER seen a city go down the tubes like Irvington. As a youth growing up in Jersey City and Newark, Irvington was the place we feared walking through past 7:00PM. Not anymore, many fear walking in Irvington AT ANY TIME!! Parents, politicians, Pastors and the residents MUST do more to recover this town!

What has happened to Irvington, NJ? - 8/3/2008

I remember Irvington, NJ as a nice place to live as a kid. You felt safe bike riding and hanging out with your friends at the Dairy Queen on Springfield Avenue. The area started to change and we moved away a long time ago. I haven't been back to New Jersey for some years now. My sister recently came for a visit with shocking news about Irvington from a visit there earlier this year. She went to see our elementary school, Berkeley Terrace and the area where we played as children. She found what looked like the warzones you see depicted on T.V. She said buildings had been leveled and there was police tape everywhere along 20th Avenue. The place had a sinister, eerie-feeling to it. She did not feel safe. She saw a police officer who told her that she should immediately leave the area and hadn't she heard about what was going on with the street gangs in the news!!!! Irvington had to call on the state or the national guard to step in and help. The police officer insisted on escorting her out because he said a car was no protection from bullets. What's going on in Irvington? I feel bad for the people still living there. When did all this happen?

Cheap Housing/High Crime Rate - 6/22/2006

Just like most places in an Urban area, "you have good sections". Although the crime rate is high if you live more towards the Union, Maplewood and Hillside border it is most likely safer. Irvington also have homes that are still in the high 100's range, unlike more suburban areas in New Jersey where the cost of a home is close or in the 300's range.

Crime Rate - 1/26/2006

Irvington has a higher crime rate than Camden but alot of people dont know it because to be voted most Dangerous City, the city has to have a population of 75,000 to 500,000. Irvington just has a little over 60,000. But Camden is like the third world country of America. Camden don't even have too many federal building in the downtown area. That's the reason why Camden is voted worst. But when it comes the crime Irvington has it. Irvington is known for having street gangs Crips and they are worst than Long Beach California Crips
