What BestPlaces Users Say about Juneau

Juneau, Alaska is the capital city of Alaska and is located in the southeast region of the state. It is known for its stunning natural beauty, including nearby glaciers and mountains, as well as its rich history and cultural diversity. With a population of around 32,000, Juneau is a small but vibrant community. Many people are drawn to this unique place for its outdoor activities, strong sense of community, and slower pace of life compared to other cities. However, living in Juneau comes with its own set of challenges, such as high costs of living and limited job opportunities. Let's take a look at what some users have to say about their experience living in Juneau.

According to Jodi, a long-time resident, "Juneau is truly a special place to live. The community is incredibly supportive and welcoming, and the scenery never fails to take my breath away. However, the cost of living can be a major downside. Groceries and housing are especially expensive, and the job market is limited. Overall, I would highly recommend Juneau to those who value nature and a tight-knit community, but it's not for everyone."

Another user, Jake, shares a different perspective, saying, "I moved to Juneau for a job opportunity and have been pleasantly surprised by the quality of life here. The natural beauty is unbeatable, and there are plenty of outdoor activities to keep me busy. The community is also very engaged and offers a lot of cultural events and festivals. However, the winters can be tough and the isolation can be challenging at times."

In contrast, Carrie, who recently relocated to Juneau, has mixed feelings about the city. She says, "Juneau is a beautiful place, but it's definitely not for everyone. The lack of sunlight during the winter months took a toll on my mental health, and the cost of living is outrageously high. On the positive side, the people here are friendly and genuine, and there's a strong sense of community. I've also found some great job opportunities in government and tourism industries."

Lastly, Andrew, a recent college graduate, shares his experience living in Juneau. He says, "I've been living in Juneau for a year now, and I absolutely love it. The hiking and outdoor activities are unmatched, and there's always something new to explore. The local food scene is also surprisingly diverse and delicious. However, I do wish there were more career opportunities in my field of study."

In summary, the majority of users agree that Juneau is a beautiful and welcoming community with plenty of outdoor activities and a strong sense of community. However, the high cost of living and limited job opportunities are common concerns. Personal experiences and preferences also play a significant role in one's overall satisfaction with living in Juneau.

Hiking is fun! - 5/29/2014
Juneau AK has over 50 trails in and around our community. They can be short as a jaunt from the road to the water to go shell collecting or much longer. Such as a hike up Mount Roberts and heading out beyond with a backpack and safety in mind. Mendenhall Glacier which lies in the Tongass rainforest offers beautiful scenic trails for short or long duration. Whatever you do come prepared for fun and maybe a little liquid sunshine (rain). Maps are a must because some trails have what looks like various paths in which to choose. I have had to do my share of taking a wrong path only to discover that it ended at a stream or was some kind of wildlife trail. I hike with dogs and they wear bear bells. You don't want to be in bear country and surprise a momma with her cub(s). Play it safe and have fun on our trails. Let someone know where your going and when you expect to return. Enjoy the trails, please do not litter and to play it safe follow a guide to not get lost. Read More

Virtually no violent crime - 8/10/2011
Have you ever been in a place where you don't need to worry about who is walking behind you, where you may leave your house and car unlocked without worrying about them, where everyone says hello and means it? That's Juneau. Certainly we have crime including, for the most part, drug abuse and domestic violence but it's pretty difficult to get away with most criminal behavior because, for example, a stolen car can only get out of Juneau via ferry! This is the most peaceful and stress-free place I've ever Read More

High cost of Living - 5/12/2011
Have lived in Juneau since 1985. Unless you have a college degree and like rain for get it. The cost of living, food, utilities very high. On a sunny day the place is heaven. Great tourist trap. I live a one from the Mendenhall Glacier. Low paying jobs are plenty, but the cost of housing makes in impossible to enjoy the outdoor. In other words. you got to work longer hours to live. Selling a house is plus. Read More

To live in Juneau, it is important to disregard the weather much of the time. With good gear, the outdoors is usually available and magnificent. Juneau is friendly and not a dark place after all - 11/14/2007
Juneau Alaska is part of the National Tongas Forest...meaning rains a lot. The cost of living is very high, and groceries no doubt 30% more than the national average (lower 48). It is always good to weigh your options before moving to S.E. Alaska and Juneau Alaska. Otherwise you wasted your time, money to find out this is not what you wanted. Juneau does have friendly people. People have expectations about places they want to go visit and ideals before getting to their destinations...sorry we don't live in ice igloos all year Read More
