Originally a company owned mill town, McCloud is a great get away place. Only 15 minutes from Mt. Shasta on hwy. 89, the town is comprised mainly of old mill houses. Good fishing on the McCloud river and reservoir are a few of the attributes. Shasta Ski Park is also close by. Since the mill closed, the town has had limited employment opportunities. About one third of the town are retirees, another third are absentee owners that recreate in the winter and summer. The remaining third if not employed in related government services find it difficult to make a living, if at all. The town is serviced by a community service district that provides water,
sewer, refuse disposal, fire protection and snow removal. Homeowners pay around $90 per month for the service. The district has been struggling financially for years.
