Yes housing is cheap, but it is not cheap to live here. You will likely pay more in utilities than you will in rent and that is miserable. Food and other items are expensive too. Don't let them trick you with the cheap Read More

Great Small Town - Don't listen to the luddites - 7/5/2010
I'm not sure what "zip zam" is doing wrong, but the Walsenburg I visit
for weeks (or months) every year is nothing like that person
describes.

People are decent and nice. The Safeway is small, but has very good
selection - not bad produce or meat either. The hardware store is fine
- but full of men who have work to do, so some may seem a bit gruff if
your messing around. And as for food, here's what I can think of off
the top of my head: Fast food - A&W, Taco Bell, KFC, Pizza Hut, Carl's
Jr, and Subway; there is also Georges, Huerfano Cafe, Rosa's Cantina,
and several others I can't recall the name of. These all have good
food. Corrine's has perfectly decent Mexican food. But I will agree
about the iron horse - skip it.

Overall, Walsenburg is a nice small town with surprising amenities
(they have a waterpark!) and PLENTY of good places to Read More

Small Town but Nice Place - 10/23/2009
We visited Walsenburg last week, Oct 2009. The town is extremely small. Unlike the comment mentioned on someone's previous post, we did find places to eat. There is a Pizza Hut, a Carl's Burgers and a local cafe. The town has a hardware store, a Dollar General store and a Safeway grocery. There are also some small shops that probably do most of their business in the Summer months. Some more upscale neighborhoods are forming on the outskirts of town. Small town with not much to do, but many people like such a slow pace. We liked the area and the climate was nice. A good breeze/wind was always blowing. La Veta is only a few miles down the road. If you want to go shopping Pueblo is about an hours drive up highway Read More

Keep Drivin' - 4/14/2009
We tried to settle in the Walsenburg area and spent much of 2008 in a rural area nearby. With the exception of the decent folks at the feed store, it was an awful experience. The local government is a joke. Inexcusable incompetence at every level.

If you're just driving through do not stop to eat. There is no decent prepared food in town. None. Zero. Worse, the only grocery store, a Safeway, has terrible produce, meat, and bakery sections. Tacquitos at 7-11 are your best bet. If you're feeling brave, stop at Corrines Mexican restaurant for liquid cheese and $1 canned sodas. For more upscale fair try the Iron Horse where it's apparently "management policy" not to serve drinks other than water without ice. Classy!

Customer service, with the exception I noted above, is non existent. Clerks are indifferent at best. I was cussed at by an ancient cashier at the only hardware store in town. My infraction? Walking out of the restroom across a section of floor she had Read More
