What BestPlaces Users Say about Decorah

Decorah, Iowa is a small city located in the northeastern part of the state. It is known for its natural beauty, with many parks and trails for outdoor enthusiasts. Decorah is also home to Luther College, a prestigious liberal arts school. The city has a population of approximately 8,000 people and has been recognized as one of the best places to live in Iowa.

Decorah is a charming and picturesque city, according to many user reviews on Best Places. One reviewer, Sarah R, says, "I absolutely love living in Decorah. The natural beauty here is unmatched and the community is so welcoming." Another reviewer, Kevin B, agrees, stating, "I moved to Decorah for college and ended up staying after graduation. This city has so much to offer, from outdoor activities to cultural events." Similarly, Jane S describes Decorah as "the perfect blend of a small town and a college town. There is always something to do, but it still has a tight-knit community feel."

However, not all reviews are entirely positive. Some users mention the high cost of living in Decorah. As David M puts it, "I love the city, but it can be expensive to live here. Rent and property prices are on the rise, which can be a challenge for young professionals." Another user, Lisa C, points out the lack of diversity in Decorah, saying, "It's a great place to raise a family, but it can feel homogenous at times. I would love to see more diversity and inclusion efforts in the city."

Overall, it seems that Decorah, Iowa is a beloved city by its residents. Its natural beauty, strong sense of community, and excellent education opportunities make it a desirable place to live. However, potential residents should also consider the cost of living and the lack of diversity in the city.

expensive for a small town - 5/26/2015
ridiculously expensive housing for such a small town. The wages in the town do not even remotely compensate for the high cost of housing. Average housing prices start at 170k. The average wage though is 10-15 an hour for most places. Rentals are rare and overpriced thanks to the college. Property taxes are also exorbitant for such a small town with so little to offer.

For example, the average per capita income in decorah is 21920, but the average house cost is 150328. I don't know anyone with a 21k income that can afford a 150k house. The average house cost i the state of iowa is 126k. Decorah is way overpriced for no reason.

While the area is pretty and the town has a certain charm to it, especially compared to other towns in iowa, the lack of anything to do coupled with low average wages and high housing costs make it a less than ideal place to Read More

Luther College - 1/3/2010
This college has the most extensive music program of any liberal arts college around, has a strong connection to public radio, and Decorah is reputed to be a lovely place to live if one is culturally inclined. I'm looking at it as a northern outpost of my relocation Read More
