Great place to live - 8/19/2009
I like living in Suffolk because of the smaller town feel yet having the conveniences of the larger city. We have been happy in Northern Suffolk. The schools don't seem to get as high of a rating as some of the surrounding cities, but we've been happy. Our kids love going to school Read More

Unremarkable? - 6/15/2009
Suffolk is a bit difficult to describe because it is geographically the largest city in Virginia. Downtown has been slightly revitalized but I have no reason to go there except to eat at one of the few restaurants. Surprisingly high crime for such a small downtown, too.

I happen to live in the rather undeveloped western portion and while I like my one, quiet acre, I do not like the increasingly congested commute to Chesapeake. Even extending the bypass is not going to solve this problem since the highway is only two lanes east and west. I drive 70+ mph but somebody is always tailgating, which puzzles me since the practice is not going to help given the congestion.

After 15 years I am leaving and not particularly sad about it. I will miss my home, yard, and the moderate weather but if I am going to deal with heavy congestion I at least want some services like cable and DSL, neither of which is available where I live.

Suffolk, sleepy town no more - 5/5/2008
We've been in Suffolk for 5 years and seen it grow with more businesses and people. Great "bedroom" community near Norfolk and Virginia Beach. Lots of attractions/history in the hampton roads area. Great symphony. If you are retired military, there are more military bases here than in the rest of the US. Only problem is the county doubled the price for water. Dig a well to water your grass or be prepared for $500 water bills every 6 Read More

Suffolk, VA - 10/2/2007
After having lived in much larger cities, namely Phoenix, Denver and Baltimore, it was a bit of an adjustment to get the family used to Suffolk and Hampton Roads. Once here, the area was overall very rural and country-fied despite being made up of seven different cities. Lots of saltwater activites are available, wide open spaces and puddles of city atmosphere dot the area. Far from "big city" but not really small town, especially Norfolk. Traffic is, like many places, horrific, with rudeness ruling the day (even though metro DC takes the East Coast title). Once you're out of your car everyone gets along very well, race is not an issue, and there are lots of things to Read More

Nothing much good about Suffolk - 8/1/2007
I grew up in Virginia Beach and moved to Suffolk. I had no idea this place was so trashy. Downtown Suffolk looks like a ghetto and crack heads are walking all over the place. Violent crime is twice the national average and there are way too many public housing areas. Public housing = higher taxes and higher crime. Maybe someday after the land values go to high for the slum lords and losers to afford to live here anymore, Suffolk will become an OK place. For now it is crime-ridden, ugly, and has horrible Read More

HOUSING - 6/22/2006
I have been here in the Hampton Roads area for the last 11 years now. I am now residing in Suffolk. When I first relocated here due to spouse in the military. I resided in Norfolk in the Larrymore Lawns if leaved there for about 6 years. I have now been in Suffolk for the last 5 years. I have seen the cost of homes spike but the income has not spike they have homnes that are $600+ who can afford this homes? The area in Hampton Roads is very congested the design of the freeways are horrible they need to redo. I am not a beach person so really there is nothing that really excites me about this area. Sure the weather is great that is about Read More
