Review of Cincinnati, Ohio

Moved to Cincinnati from Boston (P&G)
Star Rating - 3/26/2006
Thanks to Gillette selling out the city of Boston to Proctor & Gamble, I relocated to Cincinnati and I have to say so far so good. Someone below mentioned that Cincinnati wasn't a small town, well thank god. I wouldn't have moved to Cincinnati is it was a small town. I moved to a part of the city called Hyde Park and it has been quite enjoyable. While Cincinnati is not as large as Boston, I have been content with the amenities and the surprising hilliness of the region. And here I thought the Midwest was boring and flat? Well at least that isn't the case here. So far I have witnessed a nice array of ethnic restaurants, acceptable sushi for an inland city. I recommend Beluga and Teak Thai for sushi. The architecture is gorgeous and old like Boston although the city lacks a good subway system although there are talks of using some existing subway tunnels that have never been used lately. Unlike another review, the people here have been very welcoming. Another thing, I have been running into a surprising amount of teahouses. I don’t know if this is luck or coincidence but it has been another surprising find here.

Overall, I would give the city and 8.5 out of 10 for quality of life. It has been a cool place to live so far especially coming from Boston.

Cincinnati has amazing world-class theater. Playhouse in the Park won a Tony Award for regional excellence, and The Ensemble Theater is an incredible little place – they perform world-premiere plays and musicals in what used to be one of the worst areas of town (it's gentrified now). If you're at all into the arts, the Symphony and many theaters downtown give you everything you need. Check out the Showboat Majestic (a theater on a boat) during the summers. Plus the riverfront is awesome in the summer. We actually have nationally-ranked fireworks displays too. Who knew? We also have... professional sports. They're OK. We have them. haha. I will admit though, having grown up in the beautiful woodsy suburbs, that Cincinnati is a racist town. No sugar-coating. It's ugly. Just look at the ignorant comments about black men on this page. It's really embarrassing. And it's everybody -- from the poor folks in the inner cities to the appalachians across the river to the educated folks in Hyde Park. That town needs to do something serious about the racism. For all you P&G bashers ~ Procter & Gamble actually the one place in the city where you can find honest-to-God diversity. One of my friends is from China and works for P&G told me that he loves the company because it's so multicultural - he never has to apologize for having an accent or being different.

I am planning to move to Cincinnati in 2009. I am nearing retirement but I still like intellectual activities such as taking courses at the university, joining book discussion groups, and outdoor exercise. I have been thinking about the Hyde Park area. Can you tell me something about it?
