Review of Spokane, Washington

We do not have 4 seasons
Star Rating - 2/7/2013
I have lived in Spokane for 28 years. The statement that Spokane has four seasons is inaccurate. We get 3 to 4 feet of snow most winters. Yes, you read that correctly. You had better like dealing with tons of snow and know how to drive on icy streets. Check out You Tube if you don't believe me. The snow generally stops in March and it stays chilly and cloudy until after the 4th of July. After July 4 it shoots up to over 95 degrees. It finally gets nice in August, but that is when the farmers decide to burn their grass fields so the air is filled with smoke and chokes your lungs. So you have to keep your windows closed.

There are no jobs here. Do not move here unless you have been transferred.

The downtown area used to be nice, but gangs have moved in and it is not safe to be downtown after 5:00. Kids hang around and intimidate you until you stop coming downtown.

The bus system is excellent.

I realize this is a negative review, but you are been forewarned. To say that this is one of the best retirement cities is ridiculous.

Not sure where you are living in Spokane, but ever since we've been here there are four seasons... winter for sure, shorter spring, summer length varies and a fall as well when the colors change.

I'll comment on the weather. Look at climate on this page and you'll see Spokane is always on a severe up to down line. It's going from extremely cold/gray to extremely hot/dry without much in between. IOW, you won't see many 70 degree clear days. It's a constant physical adjustment. The weather is really nice in June and October and sometimes May and September. The rest of the year it is usually gray/stormy or hot/smokey. We moved away because the outdoor season is just too short and we are getting older. Not enough time left to spend 6 months of the year waiting for weather to be decent enough to enjoy the outdoors. Nationwide, it probably isn't that unusual to have so much crappy weather. But there are much better places for climate. There are 4 seasons, but spring and fall are often only a couple of weeks. Summer is a good 3 months but has been very smokey the last 5 years. Winter lasts for 5 to 6 months.
