I agree with cons #6. This is very true of apartment complexes on the east end of Seven Pines road. They are renting to anyone who can afford the rent with little to no screening. The area is becoming very trashy!

My family and I moved to Springfield in August for a new job. While the place is not Nirvana, it is far from Hades. I actually bought a small place near Seven Pines and it is not that bad. I wouldn't want to live in the apartments, but that could be fixed without too much effort or money. (The nature of security liability in IL will be a positive factor in getting it cleaned up). Also, we had one small incident and found the police to be friendly and very responsive. There are a lot of very nice parks, housing is very reasonable, good places to eat and shop, and traffic is not bad at all. Overall I have definitely lived in places that rate higher but I did not find to be nearly as nice (and had far worse traffic and crime) like Charlotte, NC. By the way, the school system takes a lot of shots for being poorly rated, but you just have to be selective. Even the Seven Pines area has very highly rated Sandberg Elementary (7 of 10 on Greatschools.net). You just have to get to know the area and choose wisely as far as a place to hang your hat IMHO.
