Review of Sparta, Georgia

Sparta Ga still stuck in 1950's racist America
Star Rating - 3/7/2019
If i could give this place a negative star, I would. I lived in Sparta GA for a period of 5 years and I never want to return. The town is segregated by race. 99% of the white children attend the private school called John Hancock Academy. While I lived there, I lived among the black population and was referred to as an "N" lover. I was ridiculed when I declined to accept the invitation for the white members of the town to pay for my children to attend the private school in order to get them out of the "black" school. The town is stuck in the dark ages. The judicial system is run by a group of old white men who are racist. Even the day is divided up to keep black and whites separate. There is an unwritten rule that white people do their shopping before noon, and black people come out after noon. One time I was sitting at a local restaurant with an African American man. This was a meeting I was having with him for my job. Wait staff was rude to the point we couldn't drink our coffee or eat our food for fear they had spit in it. He made the comment for us to get out of there before we would be lynched and it was not said as a joke. The last time I went to that town was about 7 years ago, and discovered it had not changed. This problem also occurs in other towns in Hancock County. Churches, schools, and businesses are all racially segregated and they firmly believe that the races should not mix, on any level and enforce these rules through intimidation.

I doubt very seriously that you’ve been to Sparta in the past 27 years, it’s been that long that we’ve had an African American as Mayor. It’s also been that long that there has been a majority of African Americans on City Council and County Commission. As far as restaurants go, all but one are owned by African Americans, the one exception is owned by Indian Americans. All but 4 stores on Broad St. are closed so there’s no way they could survive by segregating customers shopping hours.

I don't believe a word of this review. You sound like you have a chip on your shoulder, and imagined scenarios for whatever slight you felt, real or not.

How can this happen? Impossible, they voted Democrat in the last 5 elections.
