Review of Jacksonville, Florida

What is a good income?
Star Rating - 7/12/2018
It seems like there are a lot of negative reviews but 800,000+ people still live here.

How well can a couple live on a household income of $75,000? $100,000? Is this the income range for 2 newish vehicles and a $250,000 mortgage ($300k home)?

Compared to NY, I can't imagine the traffic is that bad... :)

I am a native Floridian. You think Jacksonville is bad? Go to South Florida. A 3 bedroom house to rent?-$1800-$2000. In Jacksonville we rented a beautiful 3/2 with a 2 car garage, HUGE fenced yard (corner lot) in a nice neighborhood for $900. The same house down in S. FL, at LEAST $2000 a month. There are good sides of the city and not so good. You can buy a BEAUTIFUL home for under $250,000 NO Homeowner's Association dues (get a riding mower and avoid the "condo commandos"). Avoid the "Northside", and subdivision that has an HOA. The closer you get to the beach, the more expensive properties are. Having lived all over Florida, (Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Daytona Ang Jacksonville) Jacksonville is the BEST baby far. Overdose deaths? Move to S. Florida; Jacksonville doesn't come close. Use common sense, don't go in certain areas at night and you'll be fine. I lived there 2 years and would move back again in a heartbeat, but my financee wants to move to Pensacola. Gee, what a choice I'm facing.

Florida is considered a "retirement" states. Currently, I am in Jacksonville florida but I believe because we do not pay state tax it's considered retirement state. If you rent a 1 bedroom apartment, you are looking to pay $900 to low 1,000. Some places allow you rent to own options on condos, town homes. And houses. Also depends on the side you live on. Housing neighborhoods have home owner fees. Some are monthly some are yearly. I pay 400 monthly. If you dont have your weeds, shrubs, flowers in order they will send a notice. The second warning you will pay a fee. Third they are aloud to kick you out of your home. There was a statistic average taken last year on cost of living on the amount of money needed hourly to be in a 1 bedroom apartment. You have to make at least $22 an hour to afford it. That includes rent, water, food, transportation, etc. Crime rate and overdose deaths are bad here. I am originally from Maryland. I hate this place. People ask why dont you move. Well because it's so high here you cant seem to save.

Anyone that would move from beautiful Port Jeff/Setauket 3 villages Long Island for a Florida Georgia border town, would have to be considered clinically insane. anywhere in Florida actually the same diagnosis applies. Advice: Don't do it. Taxes Shmaxes...So what..Quality of Life...If you have to get your Florida fix than buy a cheap condo for weekends Jan -March....That's enough..

Combined income of $100k will fit you in the best part of town. You can rent a really nice house in good school district for about $2500 or you can choose to rent in best apartments for about $2000. Also, people who said traffic is bad in Jax have no idea what bad traffic is. It is almost non-existent for a big city. You will see may be little congestion on 95 or 295 during rush hour but it is almost nothing compare to other big cities. If you are coming from NY, you will love traffic here and ease of parking.
