Review of Bellingham, Washington

Awful place to live...and that's being positive!
Star Rating - 1/25/2020
I wish I could give this awful place zero stars. I lived in Bellingham for 1 year and 19 days and I was never so glad to get out of a city and state as I was this awful place. I knew quickly that we were never going to fit in because we are professionals and didn't smoke dope! Several times I had to roll my car windows up because of the dope smoke from nearby cars at signal lights....no lie! I was relocated on a company transfer and couldn't find a decent home so we built a home. Yes, we built a home only because I had to build or purchase within a year to get my relo benefits. So overpriced and for nothing more than a spec house. The people here are so rude it became a joke to us. Even the people I worked with were rude and my boss that walked by my office door twice every morning to get coffee actually said "good morning" only once. We miss a couple restaurants but that's it. We found that the only people that like or say anything positive about B'ham were the people born and raised in B'ham because no one that has lived anywhere else wants to put up with the traffic, the weather, the high cost of living, the stoners, the homelessness, the pan handlers, the county government that is so narrow minded they stifle business grown, and that is just to name a few reasons. Overall an awful city with old run down homes, terrible traffic and a high cost of living! That should be the city slogan!

Your boss only said hi once a morning when he walked by twice? That sounds like a personal problem. I have never had a problem using pot in public. The traffic here is not a problem. It is nothing like Seattle or other cities. Low traffic is one of the reasons I live here.

Oh my, oh no the “dope” smoke. Bahahaha! Now you live in one of the least desirable places I have ever had the misfortune of traveling to, Lake Charles LA. A city blasted by two hurricanes in the past year so now it’s a bigger dump than before. Hope fully there’s no “dope” smoke there to offend you. You do realize there are professionals that smoke marijuana. I know many & I trust them far more than somebody so uptight they, roll up their windows when they smell “door”. Bahahah!

"...my boss that walked by my office door twice every morning to get coffee actually said "good morning" only once." Honestly how many times do you expect someone to say greet you or say good morning? ?? sounds like you're grasping for straws to complain aabout.

Betcha Lake Charles was glad you left. Actually you left just in time since Hurricane Laura smashed thru it a week back!

Agree on 2 points - people can be rude here, and it does have a high cost of living. But seriously, bad traffic? Only someone from a town of less than 5000 and one traffic light would agree. This is Washington, yes people smoke dope especially in a university town. But I've never had to roll my windows up like you said, and no, I don't smoke dope. I don't know where you are going back to but show me ANY city in the US that doesn't have homelessness. We happen to have a number of large, highly respected social service programs that address issues surrounding homelessness. B'ham does a very good job of helping out those less fortunate, we also use tax money to support our schools because we like having an educated community, we take excellent care of our many beautiful parks, trails, shoreline and have a lot of high quality cultural events - music, theatre, restaurants, arts etc. What awful neighborhood were you living in?

The county government by no means stiffles growth. The planning department will sign off on a ham sandwich and they want as much density and business as possible. The real problem is the failure to protect habitat, wildlife, wetlands, shorelines, etc. It is all about those manure stinking cows. Farmers and developers get whatever they want and the public is expected to pay for it and shut up. There is a very politically active community here and it is split 50/50 on their values. Things get heated. So we have all kinds of people. I have been here 13 years and have lived in Bellingham and the county and have not seen the stoners you describe. The big problem here is wood smoke. It is worshipped like a religion and the government will not enforce the laws to protect the regular public. I lived in Las Vegas for 20 years and never saw the level of corruption that I see here. The housing is insane, as you note and you can not find a decent skilled person to do work at a reasonable price. However, it is beautiful and there are many parks, mountains, and water to play. To many really, because there is not enough restraint in protecting the environment. People here are very active and into outdoor recreation so do not buy all the greenwashing that goes on. They choose parks and land for human use above all else. I have never seen such self-entitled people and there is strong bully culture but also a sense of community I have never seen anywhere. Oh, and racism. It is worse here than anyplace I have ever lived. This is a land of highs and lows. But it was a way of getting into your heart even if you were not born here.
