West Philadelphia-Germantown-Mt. Airy-Chestnut Hil
Star Rating - 8/19/2007
I grew up in West Philadelphia, along Cobbs Creek Parkway, which includes University City despite what most people are led to think:) There is a dramatic difference between the neighborhood that I experienced and now-unfortunately. My block was very close knit and took pride and responsibility for their homes. Saturdays in particular had everyone out in the morning sweeping, talking, etc. However, once people started to retire and leave, the houses were sold to buyers who clearly have no idea -nor perhaps cared to know how to maintain a home.

I have since moved to the Germantown section of the city and while similar problems are here as well in terms of maintenance, I love the ability to not leave the neighborhood if I do not want to. There is a grocery cooperative, entertainment, strong although divided neighborhood associations representing East and West Mt. Airy. I live off of Germantown Ave. which is a dividing line between east and west in every sense. Still, as a single woman I find it very diverse and if you are looking for a place to settle with a family, this is a good choice. I must admit that it is problematic going into Center City. It is a forty minute ride by the Route 23 bus. This bus is a must for anyone to see and experience. It take you from high end Chestnut Hill to South Philadelphia. The regional rail is the best choice which makes the ride about twenty minutes or so.

K Michelle, Do you still live in this area of Germantown (edge of both East & West)? I am curious how you find it now to live? as far as crime, feeling safe as a woman to walk on streets (all around the neighborhoods) during the day? And how safe does it feel to catch the trains while waiting at the depots as well as waiting for Bus 23 as you mentioned? Thanks!
