I can't really compare Hawaii to any other state, as I've been born and raised here my whole life. I can tell you what I pay and what I do and you can judge for your self. Minimum wage here is $7.25/ hr. Tax is 4.167%. Average room for rent varies from city to city but averages from $600-$850. A 1 bdrm will cost you anywhere from $1000-$1500. I am in the service industry (highly profitable. I am a 26 yr old female (hawaiian). Cigarettes will cost you from $9-$10 a box. Gas is about $3.37 a gallon (varies). I prefer living in Honolulu, Kailua. Priciest neighborhoods are Hawaii Kai, Kahala, Diamond Head, Lanikai/ Kailua. Weather is fantasic. Perfect all year round. STILL have never seen snow personally. People here are friendly, but then againI am a local. Some people may argue the racism (locals to non-locals; not necessarily due to race) here in Hawaii horrible and I believe some people haven't necessarily had the best experience here (which is too bad). If you have any questions, I will answer them honestly and thoroughly. :)

Hey! I am seriously considering attending a university in Honolulu- probably Hpu or chaminade- and majoring in environmental studies. I am very concerned though that I will not be able to find a job because I am white and from Colorado. I have heard that there are many natural resource jobs available in Hawaii, but I worry that the competition would be really rough with me being a haole. Do you think that I would have enough trouble that it would not be worth moving? Thanks.

I am planning to move back in the very near future. I currently live in Miami Beach with my girlfriend and I am planning on a coming home of sorts but she is white as snow and the haole thing has her freaked out. I haven't been back to live in a long while only to visit. Do you think this is good time to return given the economy, quality of life, hospitality or graciousness of the ppl, cost of living etc... living here is ridiculuosly expensive now and the quality of life here has taken a turn for the worse economy,PEOPLE,traffic, cost of living,4$ gas, 8% tax, rules for everything even standing and breathing and IM sure they'll want to put a price on that soon also. So I'm of the idea if the pros outweigh the cons in comparison to hear I'll go back if not I have property in Panama I relocate to. If u you have any good advice I'm all ears. Hope your day is going great.

Hi, I am a 27 year old woman looking to move to Hawaii with my boyfriend. I love the beach and warm weather and I'm ready for a change from New England. How much money do you have to make to be able to live comfortably in an decent neighborhoood? What is the job market like? And the economy? Here the housing market has crashed and houses are pretty cheap. What about there? I have a four year old boy. How is the school system? Also, what cities would be best to look at to move to based on what I've told you? Thanks for your help!!

Hi Denise, I was thinking of coming to hawaii for about 3-4 months, I was wondering if it was expensive to eat out there, is grocery expensive, is there any cheap place to eat ex: 10$ meal or is eveything out of price.

Thank you for offering to answer questions about Hawaii. My fiance and I want to have our honeymoom in Hawaii. This is partially because we want to get a feel of what it would be like to live there. Is there a reason why some Hawaiians are prejudice against mainlanders? I don't understand why they would be. Also, I am a black female and my fiance is a white male. I've read that some Hawaiian don't like white mainlanders. So, should we prepared for triple-trouble (two mainlanders, one white mainlander, and a bi-racial relationship)?

Hi Denise, I am thinking of moving to Hawaii to pursue my masters degree in counseling psychology. My husband is retired and he seems to think people might discriminate against us. I on the other hand have no fear of that and I think you get what you expect to get in life. So I am looking forward to a lovely stay in Hawaii. After I get my degree I will try to get a job in the psychology field, I just hope I will be a good fit. I had an extended vacation on the Big Island and got a good idea of food costs. Any advice you can give will be greatly apprecieated.
