Retiring in Cedar City
My wife and I retired in Cedar City a few years ago. First, I must say that Cedar has a wonderful location. There are beautiful views of the mountains, and it's a short drive to Cedar Breaks and other nice hiking areas. Bryce and Zion national parks are within two hours. The climate is pretty nice, although it does get cold for a couple months in the winter. Skiers can enjoy Brian Head ski resort, which is about 40 minutes away. Cedar City's great environment should make for an excellent retirement haven. However, one cannot ignore the social climate here. If you are not Mormon, you must accept the fact that you will be on the fringe of the social scene. People are outwardly civil, but do not expect to have a lot of friends here. Do not consider this town at all if you are young and single or have small children and are not part of the majority religion. You will be isolated. Don't be fooled by the reviewers who say how friendly and wonderful the people here are. They are probably realtors trying to paint an unrealistic picture. Fortunately, the situation is not too bad for most retirees. Most of us have hobbies and interests and can be happy with minimal social interaction. It's just unfortunate that this city is not progressive like Park City, Moab and a few other places in Utah. There is a lot of potential here, but we need progressive local government to move forward.
