A step back in time Houghton,MI is located in the middle of Lake Superior on the Keweenaw Peninsula. It was a boom town with the copper barons in the late 1800's and today it struggles to modernize. Michigan Tech University adds flavor to this this homogenous community and most cultural events are related to the university. The downtown is being restored, but the greatest obstacle it faces is the divided highway that cuts through the downtown business district. The highway divides the city's residential area from its business district, its public library, and its waterfront. Since MI has NO laws regarding pedestrians and crosswalks, this highway is dangerous to cross even at the best of times, and if you are disabled or a senior, it is quite dangerous. Cutting across the continuous stream of traffic is difficult at best because thee are no crosswalks where cars will stop for pedestrians. The city made the Outside Magazine list of great places to live close to nature, and living here IS beautiful in many ways. However, the city nor the county has a Recycling Program. The awareness is so 1965. The city and county leaders do not believe recycling is important. If you come from places where recycling is second nature, this will be quite annoying. Simple changes would make this a great place to live. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
