I grew up in West Hyattsville. The area has come a long way! We are so centrally located, only a mile or so from D.C. and the area is very diverse. People say it's up and coming, but I think it already came! Home prices are skyrocketing. The arts district in Hyattsville is really the part of town that's happening. However, I've seen a major difference on East-West Hwy. Beautiful townhomes are being built, new store, restaurants etc. This has been a best-kept secret for far too long. Where else can you buy a house so close to the District that's in walking distance to organic markets, breweries etc? Here you can for under 500k (And that's the much nicer homes) There are still some single family homes for under 300K but not for long. The area has a heavy Spanish population, lots of gay people, and families of every kind. That's what made me fall in love with it. Although I'm leaving Hyattsville because I think MD taxes are crazy, and I'm over it. It's getting to be west coast expensive, so I'll go out there and not shovel. But I love it here so much!!! I highly recommend it. And for those that think "Really?!? I'll get my Louis stolen or totes shanked or something". It's really a safe area!!! I've never had a problem. Just be aware of your surroundings like any other place. I mean, we have a Whole Foods a miles away. That's all really any of us need to know ;)
