Do not move to Long Island, NY unless you are weal
The crime is low (supposedly) in the Long Island area but no one tells outsiders that you better avoid certain areas if you want to be safe. Long Island is very segregated! There are certain towns only minorities can comfortably live in. Also, if you are a minority, you will find it hard to get into some places. (it's a subtle type of discrimination).
People here are extremely vacuous and materialistic. I am sorry to say this, having lived here almost my whole life, but I can't wait to move and get away from it. I think the reason so many people are materialistic is because costs are so high and 2 people MUST work in a family to 'get by' in the cheapest places. Be prepared to pay a lot for just a no big deal house (over $300,000). 50% of the young people/older people want to leave.
