Memories of Commodore, PA I would like to share with you my memories of Commodore, PA. When I was a child - 70 years ago - I spent my summers in Commodore with my grandparents, aunts and uncles, etc. It was definitely a mining town. My grandfather was a miner and my uncle was killed in the mines there. The homes were all the same - concrete block, kitchen, living room and two bedrooms upstairs. At one time 12 people lived in my grandparents home. There was no running water and the toilet consisted of an outhouse on the back porch. I remember taking a bath in a large tub in the middle of the kitchen. As primitive as living was in Commodore in those days, as a child I loved being there. There was a creek right across the street from the homes and if we would cross the creek and climb the hill we'd come to a movie theatre and the school. At the back of the house there was a large lawn that led up to the main highway. After crossing the highway we would climb another hill and enter a wooded area. Our greatest pleasure was swinging from a rope tied to a large tree and swinging out over the trees. In those days it didn't take much to entertain a child. I have many pleasant memories of Commodore and would love to visit it again. Somehow, I feel I might be a little disappointed - especially to find that the General Store was no longer there.
