WOW! what a disappointment
I live in Colorado and have driven by Las Vegas at least 20 times and always wished I could stop to visit. I even considered it as an option of future residence until I saw the violent crime numbers. Still I wanted to visit even if not live there.
Well, I finally had opportunity and time to pull off I-25 and visit town and was hugely saddened to see such a disgrace of community. I do take saying negative comments lightly but it is fully earned by the this town and the many who live there.
I drove about 2 miles through town going on main road. this is not a very large town. I stopped at a gas station in downtown business area, a store near edge of town, and city park right by New Mexico State Highway Patrol office.
The town is a festival of litter and poor maintenance. The people I saw all seemed depressed and ones I talked to were very curt and it was a beautiful sunny afternoon.
At the city park there was newer and older playground equipment and a newer ball field. Remember this is right beside State police office and in full view of them. Every glass window at ball field buildings was broken and glass still on ground but dirty enough to see it had been there for long time. There were houses right nest to park and all were very trashy. Maybe they were all rentals but no excuse for trashy yards. The playground was the most shocking - I had been to an Easter egg hunt at another city recently I couldn't help but keep thinking there was actually more garbage on this playground that the number of Easter eggs at other town where at least 100 children ran for eggs. I normally will pick up garbage and mutter in disgust at others laziness, but this amount was just outrageous. All despite several almost empty garbage cans around park. I have NEVER seen so must litter that wasn't at or beside a garbage dump. Then I noticed in the play tunnels that were newer plastic types children had carved profanity all over every tunnel. I knew it to be children because almost all the profanity was misspelled. There were cigarette butts all over sand box and even found a fishing net in middle of park despite no where to fish for miles. 2 shirtless guys came staggering to their car from who knows where, with pants falling down and they were obviously drunk. They were not at park but that is where car was parked which they drove away in drunk at about 3 in afternoon. Then a girl who appeared barely 16 drove up, parked, got out and sat right by car smoking and texting. Shortly thereafter a guy who must have been at least 60 parked on opposite side of park, walked over, talked to her and they left in her car. through their body language it was obvious they were strangers to each other so you can imagine what a teenage girl and 60 year old were doing. All this in middle of afternoon right by main busy road, right by state police building in full view of their windows.
What a disgusting, filthy, poor, immoral town.
I will NEVER go there again and having traveled all across this great country and the world I can easily say it is one of the worst towns I have EVER been to and I have been to thousands. I feel immense pity for the the good people who live there surrounded by the other nasty people who have made it such a filthy place.
Even the golf course was in such poor condition we never realized it was a golf course until 3rd time driving by it.
