Some Good, Some Not-So-Good When I moved here a few years ago from the northeast, I was hoping to live the rest of my life in McDonough. I love the warmer climate, especially our spring and fall months and mostly mild winters. When I noticed that Christian churches were everywhere, I hoped to find a progressive and community minded place to make friends and serve God. Sadly, in the 21st century it seems churches here are still segregated by race and most concentrate on Bible studies rather than helping others. Our cost of living is deceptive; house prices and property taxes are reasonable but sales tax on EVERYTHING (food and clothing) plus high food costs eat up any savings. I will never understand why basic grocery items such as a box of cereal or can of coffee is 5 to 15 percent more expensive than in PA or NY. I thought living 25 miles southeast of Atlanta would be an easy commute for work but I was dead wrong. Traffic here is crazy since road improvements were not planned as the population grew. So working in Atlanta is at least a 2 hours daily commute and wages in Henry county are pathetically low. I can't comment on schools, since my children are grown but I have noticed a lack of basic civil services: street lights, police patrols, road repairs & guard rails, waste & recycling centers, or animal control. If I knew then what I know now, I would have tried a smaller metro Georgia area like Augusta or Athens - any place with the same climate and less traffic.
