Providence Is Number 1 For Doughnuts

By Providence Journal Staff - original article

The Providence-Warwick area had more doughnut shops per capita than any other metro area in the country, according to a new ranking.

Although connoisseurs might wait in a line that stretches out to the sidewalk at PVDonuts or enjoy the specialty gourmet fare at Knead, we have Dunkin to thank for our nationwide leading doughnut-to-human ratio, according to BestPlaces, a website that compiles lists and studies places to live.

Mega-chain Dunkin Donuts was founded in the Boston-area burg of Quincy in 1930, so its not a complete surprise that the New England region has a high density of donut shops, BestPlaces writes.

The Providence-Warwick area had 23.25 doughnut shops per 100,000 people.

Seven of the top 10 cities were in New England, with Worcester coming in second and the Boston-Cambridge-Newton area coming in third according to the website.
