St. Joseph, Iowa is a small city located in the state’s northeast corner with a population of approximately 700 people. It has two main local political organizations: the Council and the Mayor’s Office. The Council consists of six members including a mayor, council president, and four councilmen who meet once a month to discuss important matters such as budgeting and zoning. The Mayor’s Office is headed by Mayor Dean Jones who serves as the city's chief executive officer and is responsible for providing leadership to the city government, maintaining public services, and engaging in numerous community projects. St Joseph has been served by the same mayor since 2005 who has focused on developing local businesses and investing in community infrastructure projects such as parks and trails. Local elections are held every two years where residents elect a new mayor and other officials who serve on the council. Despite its small size, St Joseph locals take great interest in their local politics to ensure that their city remains safe, prosperous, and vibrant for generations to come.
