Florida, MA is a small town located in the state of Massachusetts. It is governed by a board of Selectmen who are elected by the citizens of the town. Elections are held annually for this board and they oversee all aspects of the town’s governance, from budgets to parks and recreation activities. There are no local political candidates running in the upcoming election, but citizens have several options when it comes to engaging politically at the state level. The legislature in Massachusetts is made up of two chambers, the Senate and House of Representatives. Each chamber has its own elections every two years for members who will help to represent their district's interests in local and state issues. All residents can vote in these elections and often times there will be debates or informational sessions held to inform voters about each candidate’s position on various issues. Additionally, there are also several county councils throughout Massachusetts which serve as an additional level of oversight for matters that affect Florida, MA on a larger scale.

Here at BestPlaces, we were looking at the voting patterns since the 2000 election and realized that we could express the results of each election as one letter. R if the Republican Party candidate won, D if the Democratic Party candidate won and I if the Independent Party candidate won. The six elections (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020) would be expressed as six-letter word (R R D R R).

Then we went a little further and added the dimension of magnitude. If the difference of victory was greater than 10 percent, the letter is upper case, and lower case if the difference was less than 10 percent. This allows us to see interesting voting patterns at just a glance.
