Zia Pueblo, NM is a small Native American community in the southwest United States. It is home to a sovereign tribal government and a unique set of traditional cultural practices. The Zia Tribal Council states its mission as being “to provide for the overall well-being of the Zia people, protect and preserve our culture, customs and traditions, manage our resources to benefit our present and future generations, promote economic stability through business development and diversification, maintain our sovereignty, and ensure social justice for all tribal members”. The government works hard to fulfill this mission by providing services like health care, education, housing assistance, and job training programs. All residents of Zia Pueblo are eligible to vote in local elections for their tribal council members who then make decisions on behalf of the entire community. These elected officials have the responsibility of working with federal and state agencies in order to create policies that will benefit all citizens equally while also upholding the values of Zia Pueblo's past.
