Copperhill, Tennessee is a small rural town in the Appalachian Mountains with a population of around 867 people. The town is governed by an elected mayor and five Town Council members. Every two years, citizens of Copperhill are presented with the opportunity to vote for their local political candidates. Recently, the races for mayor and two Town Council positions were hotly contested. The current Mayor, John Hancock, has held office since his election in 2016. He was re-elected in 2018 but will face a challenge from local business owner Sarah Johnson in the upcoming 2021 election. Both Johnson and Hancock have promised to make improvements to the town's infrastructure as well as increase access to health services and education opportunities for its citizens if elected. The other four Town Council members are incumbents who have been re-elected multiple times since first being appointed in 2009. They have worked together to create a stronger economy and a more vibrant community in Copperhill through initiatives such as tax incentives for businesses that move into the area and grants for local organizations that benefit youth programs and seniors’ activities. Though there may be occasional disagreements between local political candidates on how best to move forward, Copperhill residents can rest assured that their leaders are looking out for their interests and doing what they can to make their lives better.
