Brantley County, Georgia is located in southeast Georgia and is part of the Waycross Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county has a long history of involvement in state and local politics. Currently, the county is represented by Republican Congressman Buddy Carter as well as a mostly Republican delegation of State Senators and Representatives. On the local level, Brantley County is governed by a five member Board of Commissioners appointed by the Governor on the recommendation of the Brantley County GOP, with elections for each individual seat every four years. Furthermore, Brantley County operates under a Home Rule Charter adopted in 1975 that allows for self-governance and decision-making without interference from the state government. This charter was amended in 2013 to give additional powers to county officials and citizens regarding local matters such as economic development and public safety. With its strong local government structure, Brantley County has been able to remain an independent jurisdiction within Georgia despite other counties merging into larger units for more efficient governance.
