Monona County, Iowa is a rural area with many small cities and towns scattered throughout. The county seat is Onawa which houses the Monona County Courthouse. Politics in Monona County are mainly handled by local town boards and county officials. Each town has its own mayor, council members, city manager, and other members of the local government. The larger cities in Monona include Onawa, Mapleton, and Whiting while some of the smaller towns include Soldier, Ute, Moorhead and Turin. All of these towns have elected mayors that run local government as well as representatives from each town that serve on the Monona County Board of Supervisors. These supervisors help determine budgets for the county as well as implement regulations related to zoning, taxes, utilities and more. Additionally, there are many local elections held throughout the year that allow citizens to vote on who will represent them in various roles in their hometowns.
