Sampson County, North Carolina is a rural county located in the eastern part of the state, and has a population of 63,431 inhabitants. The county is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners elected on partisan ballots. The board operates under the direction of a chairman, who is also elected by partisan ballots. It’s composed of four other members as well as its own County Manager. The Board meets twice each month to discuss topics that affect citizens in Sampson County, such as budgets, taxes, infrastructure improvements and services that benefit all residents. The county also has other elected offices such as sheriff, register of deeds and clerk of court that are partisanly elected every four years. Additionally, Sampson County elects representatives to the North Carolina House and Senate who are responsible for representing the interests of their constituents at the state level. All citizens have an opportunity to voice their opinions or concerns during town hall type meetings throughout the year along with public comment periods prior to formal voting by elected officials or commissioners.
