Mercer County, West Virginia is a rural county located in the Appalachian region of the United States. It is home to over 62,000 people and has a strong sense of community. The county is governed by a three-member board of commissioners who are elected by the citizens and serve four year terms. The governor appoints the Board Chair and the other two members are chosen from the majority party in office at that time. Local elections are held every two years in May for county officials ranging from County Commissioner, Sheriff, Prosecuting Attorney, Assessor and Clerk of Court. Elections also take place for local townships within Mercer County on different schedules. All residents of Mercer County have an opportunity to be involved in their local politics and make sure their voices are heard through ballot initiatives, public meetings or voting during elections.
