There is a lot to do in Katy.. The Katy mills mall is a huge shopping mall.. the schools are great. My mom and sister lives off of fry road.. We used to live smack in the center of town on Heights drive. I loved going to Katy High School.. It is a smaller high school.. I played softball for the Katy Softball league.. There are newer subdivisions and older subdivisions.. It is basically a quiet town. I miss living there because I now live in illinois and wish I could move back.. maybe some day I can! Katy is far enough away from Houston so you get the small town feel but close enough to enjoy all the attractions Houston has to offer.

Not what you expect - 7/17/2013

I work in Katy and I cannot stand the people here. I have never met one person in Katy that was polite or nice in any way. I shop in Katy on my lunch breaks thinking it was just centralized to my workplace, but boy was I wrong... Nobody watches their kids, they cut u off on the road, they drive 20 miles UNDER the speed limit, when in the stores, they walk in front of you without saying excuse me, nobody holds or opens the door for another person, just to name a few examples. Don't count on anyone saying hello when passing by, expect people to look at you funny when you smile at them, don't expect to make many friends if you aren't loaded with cash or the latest fashions. This is NOT a place for home grown southerners because the people in Katy have NEVER heard of southern hospitality. Most of the people I have encountered are selfish pretentious assholes. Great Suburb - 4/11/2013

I have only lived here 2 yrs w/my teenager and we love it here! We moved here from Chicago. The winters are wonderfu1 but has it's downfall and very humid in summer. Katy has best schools in Houston area. The curriculum is challenging but that's what kids need. We live close to I10, variety of restaurants, shopping and not far from Houston at all. Homes/apts vary in prices but cost of living is great here! People are much more friendly here than back home. I find my life less stressful since I moved from the Windy City!![read more...]

Greater Houston Area - 11/15/2012

Because Houston did not experience the huge housing bubble of the other major metropolitan areas, we also did not experience a huge crash. You can still buy a home in the $100,000 range, never have to shovel your driveway, have a backyard pool, and enjoy great schools, great access to the top doctors in the country, and any art or entertainment your heart desires. With two major aiports Houston is just hours away from any city in North America, and the great beaches of Mexico and the caribbean[read more...]

So much to do, and all in your backyard (relativel - 2/23/2011

Not only does this area of Texas have amazing weather, it also offers easy access to the Gulf of Mexico, and numerous lakes and rivers for perfect water enjoyment 9 months of the year. Even when it is hot, you can still get out and do something and the weather will cooperate. Every place is air conditioned, so if you need to get out of the heat, you can. Unlike snow, heat doesn't stop you from going shopping, to the movies, to a sports event or concert, hanging out by the pool, visiting the numerous cultural attractions available in Houston (30 minute drive), or heading to the water parks. I was born and raised in Rochester, New York, so I know what I am talking about. Don't knock it until you know what it is like to live somewhere less forgiving. [read more...]

Great Place to Call Home. - 11/17/2008

I live in West Houston, in the Katy Area. I am from NYC. Lived in Chicago, LA and Miami. So, yes I love to live in big major cities. People who post negative comments about Houston are usually folks who don't like big cities, or who expect everything to be perfect. Which we all know can't exist in ANY large mid to large size city. Overall, Houston is a great city to work and live in. The Katy area is a great suburb to live in. Interstate 10 cuts right in the middle of the Katy area, making easy to get around the metro area. The homes are mostly on the new side, and are located within master planned communites. Shopping is great. Plenty of places to eat. And Houston and all it's entertainment is just minutes away. The Katy school district is among the best in the state. Overall great place to call home.[read more...]

Katy, Texas -- Growth, prosperity and near Texas' - 4/8/2008

I've lived in and around Katy for 16 years, including six years when I was in high school/college in the 1980s. Katy has grown from a small farm town into part of the Houston metropolitan sprawl. With the center of Houston projected to be near I-10 and Dairy Ashford in 10-20 years, Katy is close to the center of the action. Atmosphere is friends and respectful with high school sports taking the spotlight on game nights. Business is good; housing is still pretty strong, and the economy has slowed only slightly. Gas prices are hovering at $3.20 as of April 7, 2008, while most are paying $3.60-$4.00+ in other major cities. Total energy deregulation solutions by Ignite/Stream Energy and traditionally low home prices have made the move to Katy a gold mine. Road construction and long drives to downtown Houston are perhaps the biggest drawbacks to a suburban lifestyle if you have to drive in. Katy is among a handful of elite suburbs with above-average education systems in the Houston area. Cy-Fair, Sugar Land, The Woodlands and Clear Lake are among other standouts. Beware of high taxes throughout Texas (8.25% sales tax here), but area is warm, wonderful.[read more...]

Good Place to Live - 12/16/2007

Let me start by saying every place has it's warts and Katy is no different -so if you have a mindset of finding utopia, well, Katy and 99.9% of the world will not fufill your criteria. Having said that, Katy is a very nice place to live - affordable housing, a very good school district and constant growth are just a few of the positives. Katy is a suburb of Houston, so you can enjoy the 4th largest city in America and still live in a much smaller community. As far as crime, traffic and the weather, well that depends on your mindset, after all we are not living in the 1950's so crime is a fact of life, though here it is less than within the city of Houston. Traffic is a bear but if you are resourceful you can find a way to beat sitting in traffic by using the bus park and ride system, carpool which allows the use of the high occupancy lane or move closer to your job. The weathere here? can be brutal in the summer no doubt, consistently in the 90's - rarely are the temps in the 100's as an earlier poster referenced, humidity is too high to allow for a consistent 100+ degree period. The humidity is tough - 90% is common in the summer but we are only 90 miles from the Gulf of Mexico so you do the math. Our summers last as long as the winters in the northeast but the upside is that our winters last as long as the summers in the northeast thus, temps rarely go below freezing and you can forget snow, sleet etc. which may occur once every 8 to 10 years. So, there you go not comprehensive but do keep in mind that it always comes down to your mindset - are you willing to accept some flaws and see the positives? or are you only satisfied when everything lines up with your idea of perfect?[read more...]

Tolerable living for Texas - 9/19/2006

Let me be frank.. I really can't stand living in Texas. The Houston/Katy area is not my home but I have lived here for 5 years. I hate the climate, the traffic, the size and the city of Houston as a whole. However since I have to work here for now, I must say living in Katy has made it tolerable. Katy is about 21 miles West of Houston. Katy is not in a flood zone and thats huge here in Houston area. Katy schools are suppose to be very good (not that it matters to me much as we do not have children). Katy has multiple restaurants and access to a large Mills Mall. The homes are very affordable in Katy. You can get a 2000 sq ft home for under $140,000 in many areas. Traffic in katy isn't quite as bad as Houston but if you need to go downtown then you will have to fight the traffic. Obviously the climate isn't any different that Houston. Katy just doesn't get as much of the rain. Flooding is normally not a problem in Katy and it is not in a flood zone. There are no seasons in Houston/Katy area.. only Summer and spring. Very hot in the summer and there is no fall or winter. Trees do not change colors and there are few trees and rolling hills here anyway. In the winter the temp can drop to 35 degrees but rarely below that. Summer, highs are in the 100's and heat index is normally over 100. Heat will last from May to Oct. Normally by Nov. it will cool down to about 75 degrees or so. Again Traffic is horrible in Houston/Katy. Actually traffic is Katy is fine but if you work in Houston be prepared to sit in traffic. You options are taking the bus or picking up riders from the park and ride. The HOV lane is the way to go if working downtown. There is a light rail but it only runs near town. Public transportation is not cheap. If I wanted to ride the bus every day it would be $7 a day. Houston is very diverse but Katy is mainly Hispanic and White. Better brush up on your Spanish because it is ver fluent Houston/katy. All in all, Katy is not a bad area to live if you have to live in Houston. Personally, I miss the crisp fall air and the change of seasons. The heat is unbearable and requires your AC to be in perfect working order. The city itself is small and nice and not too far away from Houston. The people are very kind and courteous. Houston also has 3 major sports teams and their sports talk radio is very good. I plan on living here about another 5 years and then will make the effort to move eastward. I can't trash this city too much because it ha[read more...]
