Thoughts on KY from a KY born and raised resident. - 4/24/2020

So, I've lived in KY my whole life, born in Bowling Green, and raised just outside of Glasgow. I graduated from Barren County High School in 2017, and currently attend classes at the local SKYCTC campus (online right now dude to the pandemic) I can probably count the number of times I've left this state on one hand. I've never seen the ocean. So, take my opinions for what you will, I wouldn't have much of anything to compare my home to since I have lived anywhere else before. Glasgow is a small town, not the smallest but pretty rural. In the ways of jobs, the most you will find are with retail/ customer service industry, teaching, healthcare, factory/warehouses and agriculture. You may find some niche positions in some businesses or offices around here if you have a specific degree but it's unlikely. The people here are mostly conservative, we do have Democratic Party, the local HQ is located on the square (near the courthouse). Recently a lot of new stores and restaurants have opened over the past couple of years which have provided some new jobs. The largest and most popular stores around here are Wal-Mart, Food Lion, Houchens (multiple locations), Ruler's (Kroger's owned), Rural King (new, just opened Fall 2019, moved into the old K-Mart building), Tractor Supply. We have the common fast food places like McDonald's, Taco Bell, Dairy Queen, Hardy's/Carl Juniors, and Freddy's (which opened a couple of years ago). The best sit down restaurants we have here are Applebee's, Colton's Steak House, Shogun, and Little Taste of Texas. Shogun also has sushi but Yamato near Walmart is a hidden gem that has the best sushi here in my opinion, which for a little town in a landlocked state is pretty good. If you travel down the main road out of Glasgow, like you are heading to Scottsville you'll come across our State Park and Resort, out past the Haywood Country Store. Depending on the time of year and weather you may get a chance to get out on the lake if you wanted too, there are lots of activities available during that time of year. If you want to learn about the history and culture of the area, you should stop by the Southcentral Kentucky Cultural Center on the square, if you need to ask around most people will know what you mean but if they don't just mention the old pants factory, it's the same building. Thinking of Kentucky? Think again! - 9/11/2016

Spot on Stephanie! I bought a beautiful historic home overlooking the Mississippi River thought it would be wonderful. Although the people seemed very friendly at first. gossip is all they are capable of talking about. Met so many people who can not read or write. So many of residents have been in jail or prison. (Wow) Even wealthy people in this small town are crooks and trashy. Everybody ripped me off! It's not an ignorant generization ITS TRUTH. Don't move to Commonwealth state either. Courts were crooked too!! I'm close to being out of here thank God!

Kentucky my point of view from experience - 11/9/2015

I have lived in the following counties: Jefferson, Fayette, Grayson, Hardin, Daviess, Warren, Taylor, Adair, Pulaski. Here are the pros and cons from experience. Jefferson lots of jobs and new businesses, professional but not that personal, lots of activities. School quality depends on neighborhood. High violent crime and outrageous utility rates and insurance premiums. Fayette similar to Jefferson but with lower utility rates and slightly lower insurance rates. Grayson is the best of both the big city/small town worlds. The people are nice, professional, friendly but not nosey, helpful, schools are better than average, low crime and well located. Hardin is a poor, overtaxed county that politics, gossip, some crime is normal. Schools are about average. Locals are rude and not helpful. Daviess is a decent place with good schools both public and private. Crime is low and utilities are about average. They have interesting activities. Housing costs are lower here. Warren is similar to Daviess but with more jobs, a few more people, locals are professional, helpful and somewhat friendly. Schools are generally good. Crime is low. Taylor is a low crime, somewhat friendly and helpful locale with good schools, reasonable housing and utilities rates with some jobs. Adair is a poor, less friendly, politically charged county with a tiny middle class, a few rich people but most people are poor. Crime is kind of high for the population. Most people are judgemental snobby jerks therefore not helpful especially for people who are from out of town, or does not conform to the stereotypical norms or they just don't like. They would rather call the law on you than ask if you needed help. Also, there few if any employment opportunities here. Most people work out of county. The schools are lousey. Pulaski is a low crime, friendly, helpful, open minded place with good schools and reasonable housing and utilities costs with activities for the whole family. Jobs are generally available although finding high paying jobs without an advanced degree is more difficult. I have travelled a lot of places. Hart Co. I didn't care for it. People were too nosey and gossipy for my tastes and seemed to enjoy hassling me. Johnson Co. It was a pleasant place. People were helpful and polite. Green Co. It was a mixed experience. fleming county kentucky...how is the cost of living in the area? i just want a peaceful piece of land..i lived in richmond indiana town of 50,000 people..i had my car beat up and other stuff done...i'm just ready to go to the boonies..so my dogs can run of course in a fenced in area..i'm 54 yrs old..retired due to a back injury...i'm from the country growing up...i hate town...so if anyone could tell me about the area...looking to buy a 5 acres tract in fleming county....

Cave City and Ky in General - 5/30/2012

Kentucky is one of the worst places you can live. I've lived in Edmonton, visited other towns/cities here, and right now am living in Cave City. All places in KY are basically the same. The people here are TRASH no matter where you go. The people here are really stupid and half can't spell to save their lives. The education systems here is insanely bad so that's why. Almost everyone here is on food stamps, disability, and/or SSI. Cave City looks like a giant slum. And Cave City people, and KY people in general, LOVE to gossip about people and cause trouble. KY is the worst place I've ever moved to and was the worst mistake I ever made. I'm leaving here ASAP.

New To Kentucky and loving it. - 12/11/2011

I lived in Texas for 7 years. The actual crime rate is the highest in the US. I was disappointed in the denigration that existed, the saggers, the drugs, violence, and general disrespect of those I lived among. After a few years of perusing many states and cities, I decided it was time to move and buy a house. I did so and thus far have not been disappointed. The tax structure, neighbors, weather, trees, places to go, and shopping opportunities are remarkable. Now I know there are those who don't see the beauty of Kentucky, but then I am retired, and ready to relax at a slower pace of life. I don't have work responsibilities, I don't need to go to bars, and become a social extravert. For retired persons, I feel that Northern Kentucky offers all I could need and want and from what I have experienced here I see nothing to reply in the negative. I think it depends on your age. If you are younger perhaps this is not the place for you. There is always Vegas, California, New York and Florida to be very active and have an active lifestyle. As for me, I am content, happy, and feel I have made a good decision. Having been in the military for 30 years, I have seen enough countries and states to make a prudent decision. I think I made the best decision that meets my needs. Thanks Kentucky.

Good 'ol Boy Mentality! - 2/24/2011

I sure agree with you! It is definitely a good 'ole mentality especially in the towns closest to Lexington, especially Nicholasville! The old Mayor looked like Boss Hogg & I always prayed if I lived there that I never needed help. When I did need help, it was sure not there. Drug dealers and corruption are the norm and they're spilling over into Lexington which seems to be getting worse than better! It's sad but true.

HAVING LIVED IN SEVERAL STATES, I FOUND KENTUCKY TO BE THE ONE THAT I WOULD NEVER HAVE CHOSEN TO LEAVE HAD I NOT MET A CANADIAN, MARRIED, AND MADE THE CHOICE TO RESIDE IN CANADA ONCE I RECEIVE MY IMMIGRATION PAPERS. THE VERSATILITY OF KENTUCKY IS AMAZING. I LIVE IN SOUTHEASTERN KENTUCKY WHERE THE AREA IS GRACED WITH THE MOUNTAINS. IT IS AWESOME FOR HIKING, EVEN TRAILS SIMPLE ENOUGH THAT MY YOUNG GRANDCHILDREN COULD ACCOMPANY ADULTS. CUMBERLAND FALLS, SECOND WIDEST TO NIAGRA FALLS (EAST OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER)AND ONLY NORTH AMERICAN FALLS TO HAVE A MOON BEAM, IS LOCATED NOT FAR FROM WHERE I LIVE. CUMBERLAND FALLS HAS A BEAUTIFUL PARK FOR PICNIC OUTINGS, HIKING, AND EVEN A SMALL BEACH. THE AREA ALSO HAVE HORSEBACK RIDING STABLES, WHICH ALLOW FOR VARYING LENGTHS OF TRAIL RIDING RENTALS. MYSELF AND MEMBERS OF MY FAMILY AT DIFFERENT TIMES HAVE ENJOYED THE BEAUTY OF THE MOUNTAINS FROM A HORSE TRAIL. AMAZING. TRAVELING NORTHWARD, YOU GET INTO THE ROLLING LANDS OF BLUEGRASS COUNTRY AND THEN THERE IS LEXINGTON AND LOUISVILLE FOR CITY ATMOSPHERE. ONE OF MY FUTURE NEIGHBORS IN VANCOUVER, CANADA, TOOK A PLEASURE TRIP TO LOUISVILLE THIS PAST SUMMER. SHE AND HER TRAVELING COMPANION COULD NOT STOP RAVING ABOUT THE CLEANLINESS AND THE BEAUTY OF LOUISVILLE. I HAVE VISITED THE PARKS THAT LINE THE RIVER IN LOUISVILLE AND AM IMPRESSED BY THE WAY THE WAY LOUISVILLE HAS CREATED AND MAINTAINS A CLEAN, SAFE AND WONDERFUL FAMILY ENVIRONMENT (AS DOES THE REST OF THE STATE IN MY OPINION). What a shame - 9/11/2010

I have recently moved here to the bluegrass state, it's a bueatiful state, everything is so green and freshing to see. I have notice that the crime in Louisville has gone upwards from what the news has said. Another area that I will mention is the area around elizabethtown and that the people don't seem to be that friendly, they seem to be noisey and rude. If your not from here then you have a hard time fitting in.

general information - 11/30/2009

Eastern Kentucky, especially Martin and Floyd Co., is one of the most trashy areas I've ever been in. There is trash all over the sides of the roads, along and in creeks and streams, and just about everywhere you look. They do have "adopt a highway" program for interstate 23, but other than that the place looks like its the trash dump sight for the entire state. It may be a poor area but that is no excuse to live in filth. While I lived there rodents, snakes, and all kinds or insects infested the area due to the filth. This state should be ashamed of itself for not doing more to try to clean the place up. A huge bonfire would do a whole lot of good as a starting point. I can't wait until my job relocates me out of this area. The people are nice for the most part, but they don't seem to care that the place is a dump.

I have had the misfortune of living in Kentucky for the past 10 years. I have lived in three areas, Edmonton, Hardyville, and now Cave City, while having visited other areas as well. Every place in Kentucky is generally the same. The people are really rude unless they think you have money and then they are super nice to you. They are EXTREMELY nosey and ask all sorts of personal questions. Every house we have bought here we have had to have fixed up because people here don't take care of anything, and then every person we had hired ripped us off in one way or another and did a half-assed job to boot. We've gotten to where we fix what we can ourselves, (and we do a much better job than these "professionals.") The people don't care about their appearance and they either wear what they can afford from Army surplus or the Good Will. Most of their money goes towards ciggarettes and alcohol. And it doesn't matter if there are no smoking signs, people here smoke wherever they want. Manners are non-existant and people cough without covering their mouths and I have even seen grown people picking their noses. If you love animals you will have a hard time seeing the animal abuse that goes on here. People let there dogs and cats run lose, especially in the rural parts, and so they get ran over, and if they live they don't even bother taking them to the vet and the poor animal winds up dying a slow death. There is a LOT of drugs that go on here and if someone here has a pitbull(s) you know for certain they are into drugs. (And there are a LOT of pitbulls here too btw.) The education system is nil. People here, especially in the rural parts, can't hardly read or write and I knew one guy in his 20's who didn't know how to tell time. Most of these people you can't even understand because they don't talk like normal people. Its sad to see the kids here. They act just as dumb and as bad as their parents. And the parents don't teach them anything, not even to look both ways before crossing the street. I've had near misses with kids AND parents numerous times, and then they blame the driver! They let 5 year old kids on ATVs with out any protection whatssoever, never mind the fact that they are on a ATV meant for a teen. That happens a lot, as well as letting little kids deer hunt and chew tobacco. I wouldn't raise my child here, too many bad influences. And once you move here it's hard to get out because people here tend to hire their friends and family instead of "outsiders

Raise your family here in Louisville! - 12/25/2007

I am a physician with a pursuit of a Master's. I have lived in NYC, Boston, Philadelphia and the Seattle area. Louisville is the most gracious, friendly, open town I have lived in. I am conservative and it has been a breath of fresh air to live with people who accept differences in people, yet stand firm in their own beliefs. I have experienced the rath of liberalism and their inability to allow differing opinions from their own to coexist. Louisville allows this, while embracing a local heritage, kindness and faith like no other. You can have the large metropolis, the crime, the traffic, the rudeness, the lack of tolerance in the places I have lived! Louisville is a breath of fresh air in a world of compromise!

Not bad. Nice place, nice town, and nice people. - 4/3/2007

I can tell you that this is one of the nicest cities of the whole state. Not a bad place to live, and the people are friendly, there are plenty to do, and lots of places to shop and see. (Lake Cumberland if you get the chance is breath taking.) There are drawbacks as there are with any place. But, I lived there for four years and I liked it for the most part. The summers are kind of hot and extremly humid. ( If you move here do not forget to get a home with a/c.) The jobs aren't that great and don't pay very well unless you have a degree. Then they are still kind of hard to find. (Hope you like long commutes!) If you don't like alot of snow then the winters are nice. Not much snow and ice but still a little cold dropping below freezing a few times. Make sure to secure a job before you move here! Although, the cost of living here is not that bad. I don't have a degree and I had no trouble living in the main part of the city. But, if you can't stand humid weather than don't move here.
