What BestPlaces Users Say about Chester

Chester, Pennsylvania is a small city located in Delaware County, just outside of Philadelphia. With a population of around 34,000 people, it has a mix of urban and suburban areas and is known for its diverse community and historic landmarks. Many people choose to live in Chester due to its affordable cost of living and close proximity to major cities like Philadelphia and Wilmington. However, like any city, it has its own unique set of challenges and opportunities.

User Reviews:

1. "I have lived in Chester for over 10 years and it has been a great experience. The diversity here is amazing and I love being able to experience different cultures and traditions. The cost of living is also very affordable, which has allowed me to save up for my dream home. The only downside is the crime rate, but as long as you stay in the safer areas, it's not a major issue." - Sarah W.

2. "I moved to Chester for a job opportunity and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. The community here is so welcoming and there are always events and activities going on. The food scene is also fantastic, with a mix of local favorites and international cuisines. The only downside is the traffic during rush hour, but that's to be expected in any city." - John P.

3. "I have lived in Chester my entire life and while it has its challenges, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. The people here are like family and we all look out for each other. The schools may not be the best, but there are plenty of resources and opportunities for children to succeed. Plus, the location is perfect for commuting to work in nearby cities." - Maria R.

4. "I recently moved to Chester and I have to say, I'm loving it so far. The cost of living is much more affordable compared to other cities I've lived in and there is always something to do. The parks and outdoor spaces are well-maintained and there are plenty of restaurants and shops to explore. My only complaint is the lack of public transportation, but I've found that carpooling with coworkers is a great solution." - Jack M.

Don't move there! I did and I'm leaving ASAP! - 10/8/2013
The people are the problem in Chester PA. Probably 97% of the poplulation abuses drugs. Many of the people that live there aide the drug dealers because they grew up there. Not a good town to live Read More

This poor city and its poor inhabitants. . . - 4/3/2009
25% of the population living below the poverty line, at times the drop out rate from the high school has been 50% (which explains why 25% of adults over 18 don't have a high school diploma or GED), 20% unemployment rate, 2nd poorest city of its size in the country. SOMEBODY DO Read More

A rating of '4' and '2' for violent and property - 7/27/2008
Seems to me Sperling's got the wrong city's ratings in there (in fact, maybe for a whole 'nuther planet). I never lived there myself, but have lived somewhat close by (Wilmington DE), and have seen my share of Chester scum drive down to steal my car, do some purse-snatching and carjacking, along with the occasional junkie killing themselves (and their own babies) in intentional head-on collisions during police pursuits, etc.... A '4' for violent crime??? Gimme a break, it's gotta be closer to a 8 or 9. I mean, unless it's because they always drive outside their own city to wreak havoc...seriously.
But while I don't think I can ever say enough bad things about Chester, just to be perfectly fair, a coworker of mine's parents said there actually once was(?) a really nice, posh club/restaurant they used to frequent there. Go figure. But the bottom line, it is a place I and everyone else I've ever known have always liked to Read More

Scary Stuff - 7/20/2007
My parents and I lived in Chester for a few years in the 1980's in a nicer part of town. We then moved to a nearby town. I spent a lot of time in Chester in the late 1990's visiting my father who had at that point moved back into the Chester home. He finally decided to move out of there after there were 2, yes TWO, driveby's at the end of his street and he got sick of the vandalism. Chester is also where many locals go for drugs. The crime is terrible!
When I take shortcuts through Chester to avoid I-95 traffic I roll up my windows, turn down the music and lock the doors; all the while being very aware of my surroundings and ready to "floor it" at any moment.
I recommend staying Read More

Kuwait east! - 8/18/2005
See the fun facts below, look at the murder rate alone. The only reason why burglaries and larceny isn't higher is because there's NOTHING of value to steal.

One thing they don't tell you about Chester. Highest AIDS and syphilis rate per-capita in the COUNTRY! Pretty scary stuff indeed.

Nice to know that the Philadelphia-area boasts two of the nation's worst crime areas. Camden which hit number one on that list and Chester who would have made had its population been a little Read More
